Minority Report : Jehovah’s Witnesses in Egypt

It seems that Jehovah’s Witnesses are back to the media when the administrative court has rejected to recognize them in Egypt branding them as Zionists. Then Pope shounda has opened his fire on them in his first speech in the same week after returning back to Egypt , the pope was expected to speak about the Virgin apparition but he did not , he spoke about the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Jehovah’s witnesses had entered and spread their believes in Egypt since 1930s and officially in 1951 the sect was registered in Cairo and in 1956 in Alexandria. In 1959 President Nasser had issued a presidential decree to ban the sect and its activities in Egypt and also Syria “during the UAR” , since then their existing has been illegal. During then the sect was accused of being a Zionist covert organization due to their believes. Currently there are about 800- 1200 Jehovah’s witnesses according to U.S State department’s religious freedom report in 2009. According to the same report despite being banned and also harassed from time to time since 2008 security permissions for groups up to 30 to meet were granted .
I remember the Witnesses in Egypt made the headlines when G.W Bush spoke about them once.
Last February 2009 the national council for human rights vice chairman Dr. Kamal Abu Maged has met a Jehovah’s witnesses’ European delegation to discuss the conditions of the sect in Egypt and Abu Maged told him to present for the society proofs that they are not associated with Zionism.
The government claims that the ban on the sect is associated with the Orthodox church more than our national security , for sure Pope Shounda III does not like it but I think he does not like other sects like seventh day Adventist church which is operating in Egypt for a long time since 1960s officially despite being accused too of being a Zionist covert organization. Of course I understand fully his opposition to them especially that there are unconfirmed news that there are converts to Jehovah’s witnesses from the Church already.
Honestly I do not feel comfortable with Jehovah’s witnesses’ believes regarding their relation with the state and the blood transfusion. I think I agree with Dr. Abu Maged that the sect has to prove it is part of the Egyptian society respecting its laws. It is matter of confidence and trust.

  1. Thank you for the well-written and informative post. It has been said that Jehovah's Witnesses are often the litmus test for the state of human rights and religious freedom in any given country, since we are always a minority and we are so active in publicizing our beliefs as well as pushing for legal recognition with the local government.

We certainly are not Zionists in any sense; in fact, we are strictly neutral to such political issues. You can read more at our official media website on our relationship to the state and also on our view of medical care (including blood transfusions).

  2. The statement above about Jehovah's Witnesses and politics is true. Jehovah's Witnesses follow Jesus teaching about his followers being "no part of the world." John 17:16. So, they do not get involved in politics at all. They are not interested in Zionism, but feel that God's heavenly kingdom will be the final answer to mankind's problems, not any political state of any nation, Jews or otherwise. They do not support violence of any type, but feel that it is the work of Christians to teach others about Jesus.

They preach to Jews, even as Jesus did, but they respect everyone's right to have their own religion. Jehovah's Witnesses do not believe in carnal warfare, that is bearing of arms. They feel they need to show the same love that Jesus preached and demonstrated, to "love your enemies and pray for those persecuting you." Matt 5:45-48. Jehovah's Witnesses believe in medical care, and there are over 140 bloodless surgery centers in the United States, and in just one bloodless hospital in Englewood, NJ, persons from 40 different countries have recieved surgery of the highest quality.

For this reason, Jehovah's Witnesses have a lower mortality rate, that is, fewer die from complications, because they do not accept blood transfusions.

They vigorously support bloodless medicine. This is based on the Bible scripture at Acts 15:20, "but to write them to abstain from things polluted by idols and from fornication and from what is strangled and from blood." So, they do abstain from blood, including blood transfusions, but even the most difficult and serious operations are performed without blood.

  3. Jehovah's Witnesses do not support Zionism or any other political efforts, they are completely neutral as to politics. Instead they feel that it is the work of Christians to teach others about Jesus.

Also, while the position of Jehovah's Witnesses on blood transfusions is religions, based on the Scriptures related to Acts 15:20, in the Bible,
they also accrue physical benefits from this position, as there are 140 bloodless medicine/surgery centers in the United States, and persons from over 40 countries have utilized the facilities at just one of these centers, in Englewood, NJ. The facilities offer the highest quality medical treatment, and the recovery rates for Jehovah's Witnesses are greater than that of those who sponsor traditional medicine with blood transfusions. So a net savings of life results.

  4. The apostle Paul,"apostle to the nations" (named Saul at birth), studied under the esteemed lawyer Gamaliel. His sage advise to Christian persecutors still stands in developed countries. (Acts 5:35-40) "pay attention to yourselves as to what YOU intend to do respecting these men....., under the present circumstances, I say to YOU, Do not meddle with these men, but let them alone because, if this scheme or this work is from men, it will be overthrown; but if it is from God, YOU will not be able to overthrow them; otherwise, YOU may perhaps be found fighters actually against God.” I hope that one day Egypt will recognise this wisdom.

  5. While I denounce banning and restriction of any peaceful religious group, I would like to see the peer reviewed scientific evidence of the claims above stating that bloodless surgeries generally have better outcomes than those requiring blood transfusions. Such claims are without foundation.

Over the years, Jehovah's Witnesses have altered their doctrine of no blood in any form to now include blood fractions. Their original policy as first defined in the 1940's has evolved from disallowing even vaccines made with blood components to a policy that allows many blood fractions. They also once said that organ transplants were a form of cannibalism, but such are now allowed. Why the change?

I would never argue with an adult who, for religious reasons, would not accept certain medical procedures, but it is wrong to risk the lives of minor children who cannot make thier own educated decisions about blood transfusion.

Please allow me to present myself as living monumental evidence of the benefits of surgery without blood. Two years ago, I had my gall bladder removed. I arrived at the hospital on Monday night. The next morning, I met another patient in my room who was in for the same operation I was to undergo. He had his with blood transfusion and I had mine without. He underwent surgery on Tuesday afternoon. I had mine on Friday afternoon. I was discharged the next morning at 9 A.M. The other gentleman who had his surgery on Tuesday was still there and was still not discharged from hospital. We discussed our operations and I showed him 4 tiny 1/4 inch butterfly stitches. He looked at me in shock and moving his finger from his sternum to his belly button he told me "they cut me open from here to here!" Upon my release that morning, the nurse gave me several pills for pain. I used one pill my first night at home and that was the end of it. Not only did I avoid possibilities of complications due to human error, surgical complications and post operative complications, but I cut my hospital stay by about 80% thus saving the medical system thousands of dollars. I'll take bloodless surgery ANYTIME and EVERY TIME.

  8. Greetings:
I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses in Tacoma, Washington, United States. The local police have allowed, encouraged, and enabled criminals to assault me, steal my possessions, and otherwise victimize me. The police even conspired to kill me before. I prayed to Jehovah, and was saved by Holy Spirit. Numerous times after I was victimized, the police come and arrest me for being the victim. They have NEVER arrested the perpetrators, and the City of Tacoma has NEVER prosecuted the criminals for victimizing me. Local police have even assaulted me during my wrongful arrests. All together, I have been arrested about 60 times and spent about 150 days in jail, even though I have NEVER committed a crime.

Beautiful people in Egypt have befriended me. I would love to move there, but I can't until my lawsuits are heard. So, all I can say is that this goes on everywhere--we are in LAST DAYS of this sytem of things. We have only Jehovah God to look for salvation. Perhaps temporary justice in the form of lawsuits, but only Jehovah grants permanent relief as you know.

  9. Jehovahs Witnesses are nice people..they promote obedience to the government...they do not indulge in any demonstrations or rebellion against any government, kingdom or state..They believed that thier worship would be rejected by God if they rebel against the government..they promote peace..they are not connected to Zionism..

  10. Jehovah's Witnesses believe in getting the best medical care available for themselves and their families. Many individuals among Jehovah's Witnesses are themselves physicians and other health care professionals.

It is sad when those who have theological differences with the Witnesses actively work to spread misinformation about their beliefs. The fact is that Jehovah's Witnesses have hundreds of hospital liaison committees around the globe to help advance nonblood medical management technologies and awareness in the medical community.

We as well as all mankind need to remember that the reason the world is in such turmoil is due to the fact that mankind was never intend to rule/govern over themselves, Jer 10:23. Soon it will all be over, Dan 2:44, and we will actually have true peace, not brought about by any man but by the hand of Jehovah God our grand creator. Psalms 37:9-29

  13. Bloodless surgeries and procedures are now becoming the "Gold Standard" in the most advanced clinics in the world! A little research actually reveals that it's much safer to increase blood volume with expanders, iron supplements and EPO, (erythropoietin) etc. The complications involved with transfusions are very dangerous. Typically, most cells are dead by the time they enter the patients system...the introduced blood only acts as an expander. The dead cells get filtered out by the time the body has naturally produced sufficient red cells, expanders would have sufficed (with out introducing disease or "dead" blood).

Doctors now pride themselves of being able to do VERY risky, and what USED TO BE be very "bloody" procedures, without losing a tablespoon. Eventually there will be no transfusions needed as technology is advancing and enabling the doctors patients to have a much lower mortality rate. The Jehovah witnesses have pushed this technology to the point its at now....a very good thing!

MANY, MANY people are just not educated and believe everything they hear or read regarding blood transfusion. You actually do more harm than good when you receive somebody elses blood.

JWs have the most meticulous and careful surgeons operate on them...people say they have a death wish when in fact, they actually get the best treatment IN THE WORLD.

Wouldn't you rather have a doctor cut into you, that trys to do the least amount of damage, is the most careful, and is only happy after a surgery that results in little to NO blood loss? Any blood that IS lost is usually "recycled", filtered and actually never loses contact with the patient. No need for a strangers blood.

It'll be what everyone wants after they understand the truth. God knew the whole time.

  14. I just received the news that Egypt enjoys greater freedom now with a change in the government.

The world watches what Egypt will do in this moment of change - extend religious freedoms to all, or, be influenced by powerful religious leaders to limit freedom of worship? The world is observing you.

It is my hope and prayer that with your liberty, Jehovah's witnesses will also be allowed to worship their God openly and talk freely among the community about their Bible-based message. These are kindly, humble people who only wish to peacefully share a positive message with all Egyptians.

We are watching you, and hoping for wisdom.

  15. Many honest people and Doctors agree with medical proof of NON-blood transfusion life saving methods, as being better than taking a chance on the risk of blood options and validates the compliance with the Bible verses in Acts... For the holy spirit and we ourselves have favored adding no further burden to YOU, except these necessary things, 29 to keep abstaining from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication. If YOU carefully keep yourselves from these things, YOU will prosper. Good health to YOU!”

  17. Greetings to all of my brothers and sisters worldwide. How exciting, to come to this site tonight. Of course only Jehovah knows the day, but I am 55 years old, was raised as a witness, and have seen the New System of Things in my minds eye, my entire life. Now with the recent events in Egypt, we are reminded how quickly Jehovah can allow things to happen on the world scene. Yes, Jehovah's people are God fearing, and taught to be 'peaceable' with all men, even our enemies, and put NO HOPE in the governments of the world. We see how they can change overnight, just as what happened to king Belshazzar, in ancient Babylon! In one night, his kingdom was taken from him. Nice to have this blog here and Love and prayers out to any other witness reading this. Stay strong, Jehovahs day is near! True peace and security AT LAST, is on the horizon!!! 20. To maybe add to an earlier question, blood transfusions and organ transplants did not exist in ancient times. The JW have had to adapt their teachings in this regard and at the same time try to adhere to what they believe are God's laws. I would rather they reevaluate what they believe than continue in a possible error or misinterpretation of scripture. There are teachings such as the forbidding of priests to marry which people hold fast to even though it is clearly a misinterpretation of scripture.

In ancient times, the custom of drinking a person's blood was thought to be of some health benefit, but this view was unacceptable to the early Christians and Jews to drink a person's blood. There is an account of a Pope drinking the blood of 3 young boys to cure his disease but he eventually died and so did the 3 young boys. Christians died in the Roman theaters by wild beasts rather than eat blood sausages and they certainly would not have drank human blood to save their lives.

In this the Jehovah's witnesses are trying to follow their example. Even Jesus suffered brutally and died for his faith. People today in the USA now have the right to refuse treatment or the right to die. Saving one's life at the expense of disobeying God is just not an alternative for many. I understand many think JW are out of their minds but I can certainly understand their position. They are far from perfect, but people don't have to be perfect for God to use them. In preparing meats, the blood is to be drained as much as possible but there will always be trace amounts of blood left. In this I assume the JW are against whole blood transfusions and seek other treatments with blood substitutes or other avenues.
