Oscars 2019 : And the Oscar goes to Rami Malak and Egyptians are happy

Move aside Mohamed Salah, you got competition now.
The son of two immigrant Egyptians from Al-Minya got his first Oscar for a leading role making history indeed. Rami Malek won an Oscar for his leading role as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.
It is a big moment.

Malek is the first American of Egyptian origin to win the best actor in a leading role in the Oscars, the BAFTA and the screen actors guild awards.

Omar Sherif got a golden globe award for best actor in a leading role for Dr. Zhivago in 1966 and before that, he got two gold globes for best actor in a supporting role and in upcoming talent for his role in Lawrence of Arabic.

I can say that many young Egyptians are happy, older Egyptians are still wondering who this new Omar Al-Sherif is. Knowing my people very well, I would say some won't be very happy or happy after knowing that he got it for the role of a gay man.

Historically, Rami Malek is the second American of Arab origin to get an Oscar for a leading role. The first one was Murray Abraham for his role in Amadeus.

There is some sophisticated discussion on how far we as Egyptians should celebrate his success considering the fact he is not raised in Egypt unlike Omar Sharif “who actually of Lebanese origin” who was not raised only in Egypt but started his career in the Egyptian cinema. “He got decent and excellent films in his Egyptian filmography”.

Well, the man said himself yesterday in his acceptance speech and in the press conference, He was raised by the Egyptian parents and is proud of Middle East roots and heritage.
He succeeded because he worked hard and he seized the opportunities given to him.

Now the one million dollar question: how will the official Egyptian state whether the Presidency or the Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Church celebrates the historical victory of Malak in the Oscars when he got his first Oscar for depicting the life of an openly gay singer ???

The ministry of Immigration celebrated how Malek got an Oscar but the question how far they will go.
Same question about the mainstream media.

Needless to say, I know that Egyptian TV channels like CBC and DMC as well MBC Misr will fight to get the first interview with him and they will probably dodge any questions about Freddie Mercury and his sexuality.

I know for sure, Rami Malek got a publicist that can help with that media circus he will face back in the motherland.
Needless to say, an old interview in Al-Masry Al-Youm for him that goes back to 2015 where he declared his support to General El-Sisi is making rounds now online.

I do not have to bet that Cairo International Film Festival and Gouna International Film Festival will compete on which will host and honor him first.
Let’s see.

Anyhow Congratulations to Rami Malek and his family. I hope he gets more Oscars and that the Egyptian Cinema gets one or couple of those short golden statues in soon inshallah.

  1. The old Egyptians who don't now who Freddie Mercury do not need to know he's gay. I mean if one asked who Freddie Mercury is, just reply with.. he was the lead singer of Queen, a popular band in the 70's and 80's. Do we really need to add the fact that '...oh btw he was gay'. That's just a classist racist attitude and I know many Egyptians behave like that which is silly.

  2. Rami is a professional skilled actor. He shouldn’t be used as a posterboy for either the Egyptian state or the church.
Talent flourish with opportunity and freedom. People wander about the possible achievement of icons should they were in Egypt. I guess Rami will be still delivering Pizza and Mo dressed a t-shirt of al-Sheikh
