That's the Oriental hornet, Vespa orientalis. Egypt is right in the middle of its range. The Oriental hornet is the only hornet that can be found in desert climates such as those it inhabits in Northern Africa, the Middle-East, and parts of Southwestern Asia, which makes the identification of Zeinobia's an easy one. The body measures up to 35 mm long, yikes.

ReplyDeleteI am glad we don't have those in the USA.
However, Japan has an even bigger species of hornet, over 45 mm long: the Japanese giant hornet, Vespa mandarinia japonica. Every year it kills 30 to 40 people in Japan.
