Another failed coup or another chapter in a media war

Some Arabic newspaper published small news from Cairo that is making a lot of buzz as many foreign reporters are trying to get more information about it; after all it is not every day in Egypt to know that there was an attempt of a coup in Egypt!! The fact that the news was published across the Arab world and found its way in the Arabic websites, blogs and forums like fire made it top news. You can imagine the impact of this news especially with Mubarak popularity in the Arab world currently.
Any Egyptian would be very interested to know whether this new is true or false , after all it is the future of his/her country and regardless of what we think about Mubarak in this crisis ,Egypt lately suffered a lot. I could not find a direct confirmation or denial; my retired relatives from the army are too old to know what is going on and if they know anything concerning a failed secret coup they won’t tell me.
And so I had to use my brain and to re-read the news over and over even before searching for the source of itself.
The News says the following:
According to high diplomatic sources the Egyptian military authorities have arrested number high ranking officers the 30th of December 2008 afternoon and that the army announced the emergency situation. The Same sources say that the officers were planning for a coup and they are backed up by foreign forces enemy to the current regime. The names or the numbers of the officers were not announced. Currently on the night of 31st of December there would be huge security measurements on the top security institutions and NDPian leadership houses in Cairo. Also the transfers of Mubarak would be limited to ensure his security!!
From reading the news in Arabic and from the language used in it, you will know that it is a rumour seriously read it again in Arabic from Al Jazeera talk. Clearly whoever wrote did not have enough knowledge to know that Mubarak was staying in Sharm during that time and already his movement is limited due to his age!!
Of course the timing of the presumed coup is very interesting.
Anyhow I could not consider this news as real one that took place because for another two reasons too:
1. This can be another round between the media war between Egypt and Qatar-Syria-Hezbollah axis, come on people for the last couple of weeks we used all our Egyptian rude power to insult them. There is a huge difference between defense and rudeness.
2. I do not think if that coup were true ,high ranking officers would be involved , but rather medium or small ranking officers because usually the high ranking officers are chosen carefully to be loyal to the regime.
I do not think that a group of officers will think in a coup just because of Palestine or because Hassan Nasrallah or Galloway told them to do so.
I searched for the source of this news. Some said it was Qatari but I found in the original news a reference to the original source from which the rumour spread: “The Same Source told Donia News!!”
I searched online for Donia News and I found the source at last. I found an Arabic News website called Donia News. It is a Jordanian website. It is criticizing Egypt and Mubarak for Gaza widely. Here is the original News. I do not know why a Jordanian website prompts for such rumour.
Already I think this rumour was originally the news of mutiny at the Anti-riots camps but it was changed to become mutiny because Gaza then a failed coup in the army thanks to the media war between Egypt and her sisters.

  1. I thought its a hoax too..

A coup won't be between night and dawn.. it needs preparations and high level organization..
As well as, the timing, as you've hinted is very sappy!

  2. you know blue I felt that I was reading an attempt of a coup in the Syrian army with all my respect and love to the Syrians
It was so un-Egyptian , who ever wrote it knows nothing about our internal affairs and system

  3. The problem with a coup is culpability by the regime. As the regime matures and the police, military, interior security etc become more and more isolated and distant from the people, they close ranks. Whether they engaged in illegal detentions, torture, violations of human rights or not begins to become irrelevant as they are all seen as guilty by their people. They therefore will do anything to keep the existing power structure in place no matter how corrupt it is.
