Many Egyptians did not watch Modern Misr TV nor its daily show "Mahat Misr" (Cairo station) or even knew it except after its extensive coverage of Khaled Said's murder , it was more active than any news talk show despite the modest resources of the channel compared to the resources like Dream TV and ON TV for instance.
"Mahat Misr" TV host Moataz Matar made a name for himself in the coverage for taking Khaled's family 's side according to what I saw in the videos. His name was unknown to me but it turned out that he used to work in ART sports , anyhow we should not underestimate anyone because we all remember how Mahmoud Saad turned from Kawkab magazine editor in chief to the most paid TV host in the Arab world topping Egyptian tax payers celebs list !!
Back to Moataz Matar , last 26th of July he began to sense that the MOI and the regime in general do not like what he had done in his show when he was denied from attending the first session of Khaled Said's trial. What happened then was just the beginningbecause Modern Misr had to stop shooting new episodes from "Mahat Misr" TV show and re-airing old episodes from the show.
Since Khaled Said's coverage it was noticed that Matar started to host controversial figures like for instance Mussad Abu Fagr with special coverage on police abuse like for instance from couple of days ago he hosted a lady that claimed to be raped by policemen in an ambush.
I think that the show may have been suspended because of that last episode.
In a recent interview in Dostor Matar revealed that he was banned from hosting Ayman Nour in the show.
Matar does not know his fate yet in the channel but for sure he made for him a name in the Egyptian media.
Update :
The show is back on air on the channel on the 4th of August 2010

Small correction, the lady claimed to be "raped" not "repaired" by the police.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering about that...
ReplyDeleteGood article, Zeinobia
ReplyDeleteBTW, the picture you ate inserting for Matar is fake. It was fabricated last year mocking Zamalek club's bad performance :)
I love this show and I have to say Z did u watch the epi with Gehad Ouda? He called Mubarak the father a pharoh :D and was saying loads of none sense and even called Moataz twice that hes being silly and used some strange terms. Apparently, there is a problem with selection of words when it comes to those so-called leaders of the NDP, makes u feel as if they were raised in a barn!! BTW, I remember having Ouda as one of our professors, fresh from finishing his studies abroad and he was very critical of the regime and was also very strange
