It seems that the Mubarak's regime is insisting on destroying our agricultural wealth till the end !! It is not enough that our cotton and flax industries have been destroyed in the last 28 years but also the regime wants to destroys our sugar industry in the south.
I found a strange stupid statement for the newly found aspiring Luxor governor General Samir Farag wants to replace the sugar cane farmers with Mexican grapevines !! Yes Mexican grapevines !!?? Because they are more ancient Egyptian temple friendly than sugar canes !! The governor who is proud of bullying history* in school believes that sugar cane cultivation is for lazy people !!!!!!!!!!!!
So all those Egyptians who cultivated sugar cane since year 710 in Egypt have been lazy !! What are we going to do with the Mexican grapevines for God sake !!?? We do not know Wineries I am afraid , already we export Wine to the West very well and you can ask Al Ahram Beverages and Sawiris Clan !!
For God sake before blaming the poor farmers and end a profitable industry in his governorate why he really starts in finding real solution for water wastes disposal systems whether from irrigation or sewers in the temples surrounding area !! A proper eco-friendly water wastes disposal system worth all those millions if the Governor wants to solve the problem once and for all with making the people there angry. Despite being happy with their new found Governorate , the people in Luxor are angry from their governor who wants to take over their land for tourism project
As we have learned in our schools Sugar cane is cultivated in Upper Egypt because it needs lots of water and high weather conditions, for centuries the Sugar cane has become a proud symbol of Upper Egypt.
For thousand of years Egyptians eye have cultivated sugar cane and the temples in the south stood there against sugar cane and Nile flood altogether. Historically the sugar industry started in 710 AD and we have become pioneers in the refined Sugar industry since the ninth and tenth centuries. In 2001 75% of Egypt's sugar needs were satisfied with hopes that more factories would be opened and satisfy the local needs 100% which could be achieved , of course this was from a decade ago and I do not know how things are now.
The governor should apologize to the farmers in Luxor and beware their anger because they are Upper Egyptians with high dignity and they are too many there , sugar cane farms represent about 80% of the cultivated Land in the Governorate so if I were in Farg's shoes I would keep my opinion to myself.
Once in a Lions club meeting the governor boosted on how he used to bully minister Faiza Abu Naga when they were in the same school together form 50 years.
