  2. @Zeinobia "Happy Easter"

To wish the non-Muslims with Merry Christmas or any of their religious festivals is haraam (forbidden), by consensus of the ulama (ijma’), as Ibn al-Qayyim, may God have mercy on him, said: “Congratulating the kuffaar on the rituals that belong only to them is haraam by consensus, as is congratulating them on their festivals and fasts by saying “A happy festival to you” or “May you enjoy your festival”, and so on. If the one who says this has been saved from kufr, it is still forbidden. It is like congratulating someone for prostrating to the cross, or even worse than that. It is as great a sin as congratulating someone for drinking wine, or murdering someone, or having illicit sexual relations, and so on.

  3. Many of those who have no respect for their religion fall into this error; they do not realize the offensiveness of their actions. Whoever congratulates a person for his disobedience or bid’ah or kufr exposes himself to the wrath and anger of God.” Congratulating the kuffaar on their religious festivals is haraam to the extent described by Ibn al-Qayyim because it implies that one accepts or approves of their rituals of kufr, even if one would not accept those things for oneself. But the Muslim should not accept the rituals of kufr or congratulate anyone else for them, because God does not accept any of that at all, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):

“If you disbelieve, then verily, God is not in need of you, He likes not disbelief for His slaves. And if you are grateful (by being believers), He is pleased therewith for you. . .”

“This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion…”

So congratulating them is forbidden, whether they are one’s colleagues at work or otherwise.

If they greet us on the occasion of their festivals, we should not respond, because these are not our festivals, and because they are not festivals which are acceptable to God. These festivals are innovations in their religions, and even those which may have been prescribed formerly have been abrogated by the religion of Islam, with which God sent Muhammad (P) to the whole of mankind.

  4. @ Jason: I try to keep this as polite as possible: Would you please spare us from this crap? It is crazy enough we have to listen to this in TV. I was shocked to see that people really can make a topic out of this. I mean come on, is this really true? Is this great country really dealing with questions like that in the 21st century? It is an insult to any educated mind to hear this nonsense. In other countries you are send to mental hospital for stuff like that.

Let me put it this way: I can congratulate my neighbors on an occasion that is special for them simply because I respect them and I am a friendly person. This is how society works: I respect you and you respect me and we are nice to each other.

Anybody who tells me "being nice to other people is a sin" is many things for sure but not spreading the messege of allah.

    1. Tom, that applies only to anyone who uses his mind not his ass to think. Its a pity that people would take some words out of context, and spread stupidity and hate, there is hundreds of examples in the Quran and Sonna that contradicts that interpretation. The whole life of the prophet was based on justice, equality and goodness and respect for others.

  6. @ Jason: I try to be nice to people and I respect other religious views but I have no tolerance for people who want to get rid of me or who insult me as they wish. Be nice to me and i am nice to you. Show respect then you receive some. That is the basic rules some people always forget. Life does not give you a free ticket as in "insult other people as you wish and tell them they are shit but in the same time they have to treat you with respect and follow your rules".

Read only this sentence you wrote:
"It [congratulating on easter or christmas] is as great a sin as congratulating someone for drinking wine, or murdering someone, or having illicit sexual relations, and so on.

Excuse me, but no sane and mental stable person in the 21st century can compare congratulating someone to one of his/hers religious holidays to congratulating someone to a murder he committed.

This is the point i loose my respect and yes, i dare. End of discussion.

    1. Tom this is the best thing I've read with regards to Egypt over the last 2 years. The disrespect shown between fellow countrymen is astonishing. When I read things like what the other people wrote I'm not surprised at how far behind Egypt is now. I fear there is no way back for them now.

How can a nation hate its own people and kill each other? Egyptians killing Egyptians is not the way forward. The only way the country will recover is by the people standing together and realising Copts are not a minority but as just as much Egyptian as Muslims. The problem is a religious one and the sooner its realised the better. Wake up Egypt, your country needs you!
