This post or rather was message spread like fire in Egyptian social media.
Of course it uses English as it is directed to Upper middle and Upper class Egyptians as well the whole world. The Source of this post is Facebook Egyptian Page "Egypt" for those who accuse me of fabricating news.
If you see anyone or any group on the Facebook or any Facebook or twitter user that uses those avatars “The Muslim brotherhood or Rabaa” then report him to fight terrorism !!!!! Probably your friend or cousin who has got Rabaa avatar on Facebook is a terrorist.
The post was referring to the internet investigation department in the ministry of interior not internet intelligence or the intelligence. It is just bad translation.
Yes people are being told to report each other in 2013 just like in the days of Nasser exactly. People are reporting each other based on avatars , posts as well opinions in 2013.
Yes people are encouraged to be informants against each other based upon their avatars !!
McCarthyism is spreading and spreading more and more in Egypt in a scary way. Currently it is directing Islamists from bearded men. To avoid harassment bearded men are shaving their beard.
Tamaroud group declared in its page that opposition in time of war is treason !! Of course I am not surprised that the group says so because in the end they are Nasserites and Nasser considered opposition as traitors that should send to jail. Those who are speaking about liberties and human rights are branded as traitors , spies and agents including those worshipers and faggots of January 25 revolution like what Ibrahim Eissa , once champion of freedom of speech said last week in his TV show !!
Vice PM Ziad Bahaa El Din proposed an initiative in an attempt to end the current political crisis in Egypt including an end to discrimination in Egypt and to open dialogue as long as all political powers reject violence , now he is attacked day and night in media.
Nasserites now are asking El Sisi , whom they regarded as the incarnation of Nasser to kick out all those ministers following ElBaradei aka Ziad Bahaa El Din.
Oh yes this is in 2013 after two years of January 25 revolution that aimed for democracy and end to police state as well dictatorship. This is in August 2013 after a month of June 30 uprising that last time I checked its goal was to end the brotherhood's dictatorship. It seems that we are replacing the brotherhood’s dictatorship with another sort of dictatorship .. unfortunately with people’s approval so far.
I hope and pray that people wake up soon.
Ziad Bahaa El-Din's proposal is far more rational than the despotic alternative his detractors advocate.
ReplyDeleteThe move to attack real revolutionaries and liberals is now also targeting April 6.
Remember that McCarthyism collapsed ignomiously. In time, so too shall the Egyptian variant.
“Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.” - Samuel Johnson
ReplyDeleteWhen a politician starts to feel the heat and get backed into a corner, he/she will often start to claim that to doubt or question him/her is unpatriotic, against the nation, anti-religious, supporting “class enemies,” or any number of things. So many monarchs, dictators, pseudo-democratic demagogues and others have used this tactic since the dawn of time. It is amazing that such a simple minded technique is fawningly accepted so often. Autocrats and demagogues exploiting this strategy use it to enrich themselves and solidify their hold on power.
Patriotism can either be an early or late resort/refuge depending on the politician in question. For a warning about how badly it can go wrong, look at the havoc wrecked by Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution. Stone age generals have no clue how to manage a modern society.
A witch hunt is a witch hunt and that's what this is.
ReplyDeleteDoes not matter if they call it "fighting terrorists" or "fighting atheists" or whatever. It is an attempt to silence others. If you don't like what someone else is saying then say your rebuttal. Trying to silence them is the tactic of the weak, the ignorant and those who cannot stand another opinion because they cannot articulate a coherent one on their own.
Anyone who acts on these base feelings is someone who does not understand nor respect freedom of opinion and the importance not to just let the others speak their minds but even to listen to them carefully because they may be saying something that you do not understand or realize.
I don't care what others call me but I do care to speak my mind specially when saying it causes other to hurl accusations at you for being a traitor or a foreign agent.
These tactics are the sign of dark times, of repression, intimidation and fear.
The revolution was about the rejection of all that.
I am not going to waste much time addressing in detail what is written in this lousy post, but I want to say to you that it is one of the worst I have ever seen here. It brings to mind the yellow journalism that was common in Al Akhbar under Mostafa Amin and Ali Amin, and is now spreading with vigor to all our media in Egypt. Made up stories, lies, and just garbage.
ReplyDeleteI have not, through extensive search, found anything from the Ministry of Interior, or any other, asking people to report on the Ikhwan, or any other, or to do nothing else you describe in this post. If this is something that some kids on Facebook or Twitter put on their own, it is still garbage, and you shouldn't put it in your blog,if you want it to remain true and respectful.
As for whether such garbage also happened during the time of Nasser, that is also totally false, and I feel sorry for you that someone instilled in your head such lies and misinformation, combined with so much hate, to a time in the 50's and 60's you and people your age can only dream of seeing again. Unfortunately, with all what went so wrong in Egypt, from the 70's through today, only few of you will be alive to see a day when you can all smile again. Elh.
you sir just went full retard
Deletenever go full retard
Oh yes, end the illusion-ary "brotherhood’s dictatorship" (no TVs closed, no journals closed, no political detainees, protests threw molotov on president's home and office)!
ReplyDeleteMr. Yusuf, you changed the subject. Anonymous was saying something else: this advise to report sympathizers of MB is not true. It is just a ruomour and such a seriuos blog shouldn't report such false tghings. That is all as I wrightly understood.
ReplyDeleteWell it is true acutally and it was published on Egypt Now FB page https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=560159864020015&set=pb.418406588195344.-2207520000.1377434092.&type=3&src=https%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-ash3%2F1150643_560159864020015_741056817_o.jpg&smallsrc=https%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-ash3%2F1238266_560159864020015_741056817_n.jpg&size=1000%2C563
DeleteHahahaha becoz this is a bloody coup!! Expect anything from those killers!
ReplyDeletethey really made me proud of being a "terrorist" :D
and by the way "brotherhood’s dictatorship"-if there's such a thing-is way better becoz simply the one year of Morsi rule is the best year of freedom and democracy that Egypt witnessed in its history and even if u try hard to deny that and it's way more better than chaos and extreme polarization that r living now due to that F**king coup!!
Senator Joe McCarthy (1950s) comes to mind (brilliant really Zee) well read and knowledgeable to note this. Don't forget Adolph Hitler and the propaganda machine. Check "The Big Lie" on Wikipedia. Repeat the same lie over and over and over, and the masses will buy into it. Then there was G.W.Bush who employed the same ideas in 2003-04 with his fear campaigns in the U.S. It worked then and it's working now once again. Same old same old same old.
ReplyDelete:(
Bush even encouraged publically, mailmen should turn in their customers if they suspected them of anything :(
ReplyDeleteMartin Niemöller (1892-1984) was a prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.
ReplyDeleteNiemöller is perhaps best remembered for the quotation:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

Dear Zeinoubia....The crux of the present problem is as you state.... "replacing the brotherhood’s dictatorship with another sort of dictatorship .. unfortunately with people’s approval so far." It is the las sentence that is the real problem. The asserion that we are replacing an MB government with one the people approve of. I don't deny the MB were "taking over" the administration but actually they are the ones the majority approved of in every single election that was held. The thugs and soldiers enforcing this regime never had and never will have a majority supporting them. Conflating a stage managed show of a large minority voice in Tahrir with real democratic majority is a serious error. In any free and fair elections now the islamist bloc in general will gain anything around 55 to 65% and the old guard nasserist and liberal alliance around 35-45%. It is now once again the dictatorship of a minority...The problem is the denial of that which is allowing the witch hunt approach.
ReplyDeleteIf the MB are real terrorist, they would have already taken back the power from al sissi easily. For one month they gathered in front of military base staedfastingly and peacefully. If today they decide to raise arm next month they are able to put al sissi in jail. They have the capacity and able to mobilize the masses.. but all this while they are calling for peacefull demonstration...use your concience they are being oppressed and yet they love this nation of yours..they are more sincere towards the people of egypt.. open your eyes... A Malaysian.
ReplyDeleteFrom a french-Moroccan, currently in London, whom lived in Egypt during the uprising in 2011, and who is following very worryingly what's happening now... totally agree with you Zeinobia ! people like you make me feel that Egypt has not completely lost its struggle for justice, people and human rights ! the hope is still there !
