Egyptian Chronicles: Gaza by the Numbers: 1000 Days of Genocide

Thursday 2/7/2026 marks the 1000th day following the genocidal war launched by Israel following the 7 October attack.

1000 days passed, and we saw the live genocide in the 21^st century taking place live in Gaza and other occupied areas in Palestine, Lebanon, Iran and Syria.

Now that is what has happened in Gaza and its 2.5 million population after 1000 days of an Israeli war and world silence.

More than 90% of the Gaza Strip has been destroyed, and Israeli forces are in control of 80% of the besieged enclave. Over 200,000 tons of explosive dropped by the Israeli occupation on Gaza

According to the Palestinian official numbers, 73,066 is the total number of people killed whose bodies have reached hospitals since the start of the genocidal war in Gaza, whereas there are 9,500 Missing persons, including those believed to be trapped under the rubble or whose fate remains unknown.

Based on a pre-war population of approximately 2.5 million, the 73,066 confirmed deaths represent about 2.9% of Gaza's population.

When 9,500 missing persons—including those believed trapped beneath the rubble or whose fate remains unknown—are included, the toll rises to 82,566 people, or roughly 3.3% of the population.

In other words, about 1 in every 34 Gazans has been confirmed killed (2.9%) and about 1 in every 30 Gazans is either confirmed dead or missing (3.3%).

A Lancet Global Health study published in April 2026 estimated that approximately 75,200 violent deaths occurred in Gaza between October 7, 2023, and January 5, 2025, using a capture-recapture method.

The research highlighted a separate estimated 12,200 individuals, largely missing or trapped under debris, who are not included in the confirmed death toll in the same period.

More than 55% of those killed are children, women, and elderly people.

More than 21,500 Children have been killed, including more than 1,022 infants under one year of age, as well as more than 520 Babies who were born and later killed during the genocidal war.

More than 12,500 Women killed, including more than 9,000 Mothers been killed. At least 22,500 Fathers killed.

26,370 women have been widowed because of the war, following the deaths of their husbands.

58,800 children have been orphaned, having lost one or both parents.

Of these, 2,700 lost both parents, 6,100 lost their mothers, and 50,000 lost their fathers.

More than 39,022 families have lost one or more members in Israeli attacks.

More than 2,700 families have been completely wiped out and erased from the civil registry, with 8,574 people killed.

More than 6,020 families have been nearly wiped out, leaving only one surviving member, with 12,917 people killed.

460 people have died from hunger and malnutrition, including 164 children.

43% of kidney disease patients in Gaza have died due to the lack of food and healthcare.

More than 12,000 pregnant women have suffered miscarriages due to the lack of food and healthcare.

In those 1000 days, Gaza has become the most dangerous and deadly place for medical and media professionals.

The Israeli occupation forces killed 1,700 Medical personnel and 145 civil defense personnel.

The IOF killed 262 journalists and media workers.

Among international media organisations, Al Jazeera has suffered the highest documented losses, with 12 journalists and media workers killed in Gaza during the first 1,000 days of the war.

More than 194 Gaza municipal employees have been killed by Israeli forces, including four mayors and more than 2,800 Police officers and aid security personnel have been killed by Israeli forces.

More than 928 athletes and members of the sports community across all disciplines have been killed.

28 people died from exposure to cold in displacement camps, including 25 children, while 23 people were killed because of misdirected humanitarian aid airdrops.

When it comes to injury, 173,514 people have been wounded or injured and admitted to hospitals.

More than 19,000 of the injured require long-term rehabilitation.

More than 5,400 people have undergone amputations, 18% of them children.

1,500 people have been left with paralysis, while 1,200 people have suffered vision loss or blindness.

More than 2.142 million cases of infectious diseases have been recorded because of forced displacement.

More than 71,338 cases of viral hepatitis have been reported.

Israel has also prevented more than 16,500 Palestinians in need of medical treatment abroad from leaving the besieged enclave despite a nominal “ceasefire” being in place since October last year.

433 journalists have been injured.

Israel also still blocks the entry of certain medical supplies and aid above them ICU beds.

362 medical personnel have been detained, 83 of whom remain in Israeli custody above them Dr. Hussam Idris Abu Safiya

A Palestinian pediatrician and neonatologist who served as the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the Gaza Strip from February 2024 until December 2024, Dr Abu Safiya was kidnapped and detained by Israeli army in December 2024.

Dr Abu Safiya has been held in a solitary confinement of 18 months without a charge.

The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry ⁠on the Occupied Palestinian Territory made an appeal to release the 52-year-old director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, saying there are credible reports he has faced “continued and severe abuse”.

According to the Palestinian authorities, Israeli attacks have severely damaged Gaza's healthcare and emergency response systems.

During those 1000 days of war, 38 hospitals and 96 primary healthcare centers were bombed, destroyed, or rendered inoperable.

The report also documents 788 attacks on the healthcare sector, including strikes on medical facilities, ambulances, healthcare personnel, and medical supply chains.

In addition, 197 ambulances were targeted, while 84 civil defense rescue and firefighting vehicles and 16 civil defense centers were either partially or completely destroyed.

The health system has collapsed in the city already.

61 civil defense vehicles (rescue and firefighting) were also destroyed by the Israeli occupation.

From the city with the highest literacy rate in the Arab world to a manifestation of the word "scholasticide" — a word and a concept I did not know existed in the first place.

Scholasticide means the systematic destruction of an educational system: the deliberate targeting and physical demolition of universities, schools, libraries, and archives, as well as the deliberate killing or displacement of students, teachers, professors, and academic staff, resulting in the long-term deprivation of a population's right to education and intellectual continuity.

At least 13,500 students and 830 teachers and education staff have been killed by the Israeli occupation over those 1,000 days. Over 193 scientists, academics, and researchers have been killed by the Israeli occupation during the war.

95% of Gaza Strip schools sustained physical damage from bombing and the annihilation campaign, with more than 90% of school buildings now requiring reconstruction or major rehabilitation.

The Israeli army directly bombed 668 school buildings, representing 80% of all schools in the Strip.

165 schools, universities, and educational institutions were completely destroyed by the occupation, while 392 more were partially destroyed. Over 785,000 students have been denied an education by the Israeli occupation.

Direct initial losses from the genocidal war stand at roughly $80 billion, including $34 billion in the housing sector.

The occupation has completely destroyed 335,000 buildings and residential units and damaged another 737,000.

Roughly 87% to 98% of agricultural land has been destroyed or razed as a result of bombing, burning and systematic land-clearing operations.

The city also faces an unprecedented water crisis after 1,000 days of the war of annihilation, with the water deficit reaching roughly 70%.

Only 30% of daily need is available — amid widespread infrastructure destruction and difficulty getting water to residents.

More than 725 water wells have been put out of service, with irrigation networks and groundwater wells destroyed.

Around 1,500 poultry farms (for meat and egg production) have been destroyed, and most poultry hatchery has been put out of operation.

Local production has fallen sharply, pushing the food gap above 90%, after the Strip had achieved 115% self-sufficiency in vegetables before the war.

Burning and land-clearing operations have altered the soil's chemical and biological properties; recovery and restoration of fertility is expected to require at least 5 years of treatment.

Israel bombed the al-Mawasi area, which it claims is a "safe humanitarian zone" More than 246 times.

The occupation has completely destroyed 1,047 mosques and partially damaged 210 others, targeted 3 churches, and killed 312 imams, preachers, Quran teachers and callers to Islam (da'wa workers).

The war has also devastated Gaza's cemeteries, with 40 out of 60 cemeteries damaged, including 22 completely destroyed and 18 partially destroyed, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Endowments.

Israeli army killed more 1,007 athletes in Gaza including over 560 football players alone. It also destroyed over 260 sport facilities in the city.
