The Damned Dam : The truth and myth of the River Nile’s so-called colonial era treaties “Episode 1 : The road to 1902 treaty”

Ethiopia has fired back at Egypt’s latest statement, warning of its unilateral actions concerning the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

The Ethiopian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Wednesday using the same old accusations against Egypt of standing behind unrest in the Horn of Africa.

It slammed Egypt’s demands to respect the historical old treaties, describing them as “colonial era mentality” as it used big words like “Pan-Africanism” because Egypt is Africa’s white man, as Egyptians are not black enough.

The thing is that this Ethiopian statement, like the rest of old Ethiopian statements, plays on certain sentiments in Africa to win hearts and minds in a wicked way, twisting facts and history.

Unfortunately, the Egyptian government does not use the same playbook Ethiopia is using. It actually uses international laws in a lawless world.

This post aims to set the facts and history straight regarding colonial-era treaties.

Among the main Egyptian demands per the international laws organizing the rivers across borders is Ethiopia’s recognition and respect as an upstream country to the historical Nile River Water Shares of both Egypt and Sudan as downstream countries based on the historical Nile Water treaties, especially 1902,1929 and 1951, which Ethiopia labels as colonial treaties”

Interestingly, Ethiopia’s modern diplomacy often relies on a powerful narrative — that it is the only African country never to have been colonised.

It’s repeated in schools, documentaries, and political speeches, framing Ethiopia as the proud exception to Africa’s colonial story — the continent’s “real-world Wakanda.” Yet the deeper one digs, the more contradictions begin to appear.

What I cannot understand is how the current regime insists it was forced into accepting “colonial-era treaties” when, by its own celebrated narrative, Ethiopia was never colonized.

If Ethiopia was truly the unbroken, unconquered “Wakanda” during the great scramble for Africa, then the story becomes even more complicated — because the country was invaded twice, and in neither instance did the Ethiopian state sign anything related to the Nile, starting with the 1902 treaty.

But we can’t start with the 1902 treaty without going back in time to 1889.

In 1889, the Kingdom of Itay and the Ethiopian Empire signed the Treaty of Wuchale after the Italian occupation of Eritrea. It was signed in the small Ethiopian town of Wuchale, from which the treaty got its name.

I won’t speak about the glamorous Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) inauguration in this post — that event deserves a quieter, clearer moment, away from all the noise.

Instead, I want to talk about something else that caught the attention of many Egyptians last Saturday, right after the GEM’s glamorous opening ceremony.

That “something” was none other than a campaign ad by New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, targeting Arab American voters with a video in which he spoke Arabic.

Speaking in a mix of Levantine and Egyptian accents, Mamdani visited a bodega — most likely Yemeni-owned, as many are — and greeted the resident cat with the Egyptian phrase “Ezayak ya basha” (How are you, Pasha?).

He also stopped by a Palestinian falafel shop, which, unsurprisingly, infuriated several pro-Israeli Zionists online.

But aside from that “Ezayak ya basha” moment, there was another scene that meant a lot to many of us — a subtle reminder of Egypt’s enduring soft power. In the background, one could hear a familiar tune: Mona Abdel Ghany’s 1987 hit “Yalla Ya As-hab” (Come Along, Friends).

Even though Mamdani studied Arabic in Egypt and his wife is Syrian American, I doubt either of them recognized that song. Clearly, someone on his campaign team is Egyptian — and has excellent taste in nostalgic 1980s pop.

But this wasn’t the only unexpected Egyptian pop culture cameo in New York City’s most heated mayoral race of the 21st century.

Just last month, we witnessed what could only be described as a meeting of the titans: Egypt’s Mohamed Ramadan meeting with former New York Mayor Eric Adams. (Yes, as you probably guessed from this post’s title.)

Malcolm X at 100 : Malcolm X Goes to Mecca

It is the Hajj season of 2025 — and it also marks the 100th anniversary of Malcolm X’s birth.

In these difficult times filled with despair, anger, and growing racism in the Arab Muslim world — and beyond — I find myself unable to ignore the profound spiritual experience Malcolm X had during his Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in April 1964.

That journey was a turning point in his life. It marked his transformation from a former member of the Nation of Islam — which he had recently left — to someone who truly embraced being a brother within the global Muslim ummah.

Hajj expanded Malcolm X’s worldview. After years of advocating the separatist, Afrocentric ideology of the Nation of Islam, the pilgrimage introduced him to a vision of Islam rooted in unity, equality, and racial harmony among Muslims of all backgrounds.

The experience moved him deeply — so much so that he wrote a letter during the pilgrimage to a friend. That letter, written in Mecca on April 26, 1964, would later be included in the final chapters of The Autobiography of Malcolm X, as told to Alex Haley.

What follows is the full text of that letter, written by Malcolm X — who by then was calling himself El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz.

I have just completed my pilgrimage (Hajj) here to the Holy City of Mecca, the hollyiest City on earth, which is absolutely forbidden for non-Muslims to even rest their eyes upon. This pilgrimage is the most important event in the life of all Muslims, and there are over 226,000 who are here right now from outside of Arabia. From Turkey came the largest contagion, around 50,000 in over 600 buses. This refutes Westerner propaganda that Turkey is turning away from Islam.

I know of only 2 others who have made the actual Hajj to Mecca from America, and both of them are West Indians who also converts to Islam. Mr. Elijah Muhammad, 2 of his sons, and a couple of his followers visited Mecca outside the Hajj season, and their visit is known as the “Omra”, or Lesser Pilgrimage. It is con-

I very much doubt that 10 American citizens have ever visited Mecca, and I do believe that I might be the first American born Negro to make the actual Hajj itself. I’m not saying this to boast but only to point out what a wonderful accomplishment and blessing it is, and also to enable you to be in a better position intellectually to evaluate it in its proper light, and then your own intelligence can place it in its proper place.

He would later become known as Malcolm X, and eventually as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz — a pioneering Black African American Muslim activist who emerged as a global icon in the struggle for human rights and justice.

On the occasion of his 100th birthday, I believe it’s the right moment to revisit the op-ed he wrote for The Egyptian Gazette following his visit to Gaza in September 1964, just months before his assassination in February 1965. 

The article, titled “Zionist Logic,” remains a powerful reflection of his evolving worldview.

The Zionist armies that now occupy Palestine claim their ancient Jewish prophets predicted that in the "last days of this world" their own God would raise them up a "messiah" who would lead them to their promised land, and they would set up their own "divine" government in this newly-gained land, this "divine" government would enable them to "rule all other nations with a rod of iron."

The Israeli Zionists are convinced they have successfully camouflaged their new kind of colonialism. Their colonialism appears to be more "benevolent," more "philanthropic," a system with which they rule simply by getting their potential victims to accept their friendly offers of economic "aid," and other tempting gifts, that they dangle in front of the newly-independent African nations, whose economies are experiencing great difficulties. During the 19th century, when the masses here in Africa were largely illiterate it was easy for European imperialists to rule them with "force and fear," but in this present era of enlightenment the African masses are awakening, and it is impossible to hold them in check now with the antiquated methods of the 19th century.

The imperialists, therefore, have been compelled to devise new methods. Since they can no longer force or frighten the masses into submission, they must devise modern methods that will enable them to maneuver the African masses into willing submission.

The modern 20th century weapon of neo-imperialism is "dollarism." The Zionists have mastered the science of dollarism: the ability to come posing as a friend and benefactor, bearing gifts and all other forms of economic aid and offers of technical assistance. Thus, the power and influence of Zionist Israel in many of the newly "independent" African nations has fast-become even more unshakeable than that of the 18th century European colonialists...and this new kind of Zionist colonialism differs only in form and method, but never in motive or objective.

At the close of the 19th century when European imperialists wisely foresaw that the awakening masses of Africa would not submit to their old method of ruling through force and fears, these ever-scheming imperialists had to create a "new weapon," and to find a "new base" for that weapon.

The Richest Arabs in 2024: Egypt and Lebanon Still Have the Most Billionaires in the Region Again “Despite shitty economy”

Now to the annual disclaimers: Forbes Middle East has not included Saudi billionaires on its list since 2018. The list is based on published information and assets.

As Arabs, we are aware that there is another unofficial list of the Richest Arabs whose fortunes remain secret and unknown.

This secret list includes Arab rulers except for Lebanese PM Mikati and ex-Lebanese PM Saad El-Hariri who already come from filthy rich families with multi-billion business empires.

For the third year in a row, Lebanon and Egypt have the highest number of billionaires in the region, with six and five.

It's worth noting that the same individuals from last year are present, though their rankings have shifted. However, one has left the list due to his passing: Mohamed El-Fayed.

Published in May, here is Forbes 2024 World's Richest Arabs and Africans aka billionaires subsequently the Richest Egyptians. 

According to Forbes, Nassef Sawiris of Egypt is still maintaining his position as the richest Egyptian in the world, with a net worth of US $8.8 billion. He also ranks as the fourth richest African. This year, his global rank on the Forbes World's Billionaires list is 287th, a notable rise from his 2023 position of 305th.

His wealth has risen by $1.4 billion compared to 2023.

Nevertheless, Nassef Sawiris has been dethroned as the richest Arab in the world by none other than Pavel Durov. Originally from Russia, Durov, the only tech CEO on the list, obtained Emirati citizenship, ironically earning him the leading spot in the Arab billionaires club.

Durov is not the only non-Arab to make it to the list. A group of Indian tycoons residing in the UAE also joined, including Renuka Jagtiani, the first businesswoman to make the list. These foreign entries have pushed Arab billionaires down the rankings.

The Richest Arabs in 2023: Egypt and Lebanon Still Have the Most Billionaires in the Region

It is not too late to share the list of the Forbes World's Richest Arabs and subsequently the Richest Egyptians. Inshallah, I am planning to make it an annual tradition for Egyptian Chronicles.

The Arabic edition of the famous magazine published this list in April, and I'd like to share it with you now.

I must mention that Forbes Middle East has not included Saudi billionaires on its list since 2018. The list is based on published information and assets.

As Arabs, we are aware that there is another unofficial list of the Richest Arabs whose fortunes remain secret and unknown. This secret list includes Arab rulers, except for the Lebanese ruling class because we have figures like Mikatis and Hariris who have their own business empires.

Now, let's turn our attention to this year's list. According to Forbes' World's Billionaires 2023 ranking, there are 2,640 people featured, down from 2,668 in 2022. Collectively, billionaires are now worth US $12.2 trillion—US $500 billion less than in March last year—and believe it or not, nearly half of them are poorer than they were in 2022.

In an interesting twist, for the second year in a row, Egypt and Lebanon have the highest number of billionaires in the region, with six entries each. It's worth noting that we have the same individuals as last year, but their rankings have changed.

According to Forbes, Nassef Sawiris of Egypt retains his position as the richest Arab and Egyptian in the world, with a net worth of US $7.4 billion. He also ranks as the fifth richest African. This year, his global rank is 305th, slightly lower than his position in 2022 when he was ranked 304th.

The drop in Nassef Sawiris' global ranking is due to a decrease of US $300 million in his wealth compared to 2022.

Hemedti’s game: Another Day in Sudan

On Monday, Sudan's warlord Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo issued a short statement in English on his official social media accounts, whether on his official Facebook or Twitter account, to the world, particularly the Western world. 

"The international community must take action now and intervene against the crimes of Sudanese General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, a radical Islamist who is bombing civilians from the air," he said, adding that Burhan's army, officially the "Sudanese Armed Forces," was "waging a brutal campaign against innocent people, bombing them with MiGs."

This is Dagalo's first statement since the start of the ongoing fight between his militia, officially named the "Rapid Support Forces" or "RSF," and the Sudanese Armed Forces led by his rival and Chairman of Sudan's Transitional Sovereignty Council, Lt. General Abdel Fattah El-Burhan. 

The ongoing fight has killed over 200 civilians in the first unofficial estimation. 

"We are fighting against radical Islamists who hope to keep Sudan isolated and in the dark, and far removed from democracy," said the statement on Facebook which is currently managed in the United Arab Emirates.

For some, it may be surprising that suddenly Dagalo, who is commonly known as Hemeti or Hemedti, discovered that Burhan is a radical Islamist on Saturday after becoming his deputy in the Military-led Sudanese Transitional Sovereignty Council in August 2019.

But those who are following closely the situation in Sudan will know that the clash was expected for a long time, but it is not because El-Burhan is a radical Islamist, but because that was the plan of Hemeti for a long time.

Today 11 February 2020 and it marks the ninth anniversary of that event that my generation and other generations in Egypt and the Arab world won’t forget: Mubarak stepping down after 30 years of rule in Egypt.
It was the magical moment that we touched the seventh heaven for real as Egyptian people regardless of what happened the next day.
It is a day that I and others will remember in a mix of pride, nostalgia and sadness on how things turned to be nine years later.
It started with the usual mix of sad nostalgia in Cairo for certain group and then the news came in the mid of the day from Khartoum to remind us that there could be justice, after all, a sort of justice.

The current Sudanese interim government of Sudan reached a historic agreement with Darfur rebel groups to hand over former president Omar Al-Bashir and two other unnamed officials to the International Crime Court “ICC”.

RIP Essebsi : Some men play an important role more than they think or you think

Earlier Saturday late Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi was buried in his family cemetery after a respectable funeral for an Arab leader.

Since I was child, I have seen lots Arab presidents and kings’ funerals and one thing I noticed in Essebsi’s funeral that I did not feel or notice in those funerals: People’s true respect.

The people did not show hypocritic hysterical sadness that we are used to in our part of the world.
That populist culture about the death of that leader/father figure did not exist despite Essebsi’s old age and despite his long political life.

After all the 92-years-old veteran stateman was Tunisia’s first democratically elected president and the man met and dealt with true opposition, not a fake one.
This is the most important role the veteran stateman played since Tunisia’s independence for real in a very critical time.
I do not think that he would have imagined that he would end his life as the President of Democratic Tunisia.

Some Non-Tunisian Islamists are cursing him for enforcing more secular laws when it comes to inheritance and marriage laws as well as their constitution-related articles.
It is up to the Tunisian people to change those laws as well as their constitution at the end of the day at any time.

For me, Essebsi and another man called Rached Ghannouchi made a historical choice to protect Tunisia and its young democracy from the collapse of the Democratic Arab Spring in 2013.
This is how I will remember Beji Caid Essebsi. He was not the most revolutionary nor he represented the youth of Tunisia.

The first thing that came to my mind is that this lady standing giving a speech in her Sudanese white Thawab or Toob was a true example of famous Nubian Queens aka “Kandakas."
Sudanese Tweep Hind Makki explained in a threat of tweets why this shot of that lady was too special.

She's wearing a white tobe (outer garment) and gold moon earrings. The white tobe is worn by working women in offices and can be linked w/cotton (a major export of Sudan), so it represents women working as professionals in cities or in the agricultural sector in rural areas.Her earrings are the gold moons of traditional bridal jewelry (Sudanese, like many Arabic speakers, often use moon-based metaphors to describe feminine beauty).Her entire outfit is also a callback to the clothing worn by our mothers & grandmothers in the 60s, 70s, & 80s who dressed like this during while they marched the streets demonstrating against previous military dictatorships.Sudanese everywhere are referring to female protestors as "Kandaka," which is the title given to the Nubian queens of ancient Sudan whose gift to their descendants is a legacy of empowered women who fight hard for their country and their rights

Saving Egyptian Heritage : The old Italian Phosphate Company Colony in El-Quseir

God knows that I still feel sad about how that small watches shop in Downtown Cairo inaugurated in 1907 demolished “wait for a video clip about it”, only the same thing is being repeated in another place.

In the south of Egypt at the rich-history yet the small city of El-Quseir lays a small abandoned and forgotten complex that like a small colony made by an Italian mining company and it is a time capsule.

Out of the crypt : Algeria’s Bouteflika is running for 2019 Presidential elections.

I am sorry for being rude, so rude to choose this headline. I know it is but it is the only suitable thing I can see.
Algeria’s ruling party National Liberation Front “FLN” declared on Sunday that President Abdel Aziz Bouteflika was going to run for the presidency in the upcoming Presidential elections in April 2019 according to official Algeria Press Service “APS” news agency !!

I could not find the exact news on the official APS website but I found news reports like Former elected MPs called Bouteflika to run for the fifth time and the National Rally For Democracy Party calls President Bouteflika to continue that building the nation process and to run for the office again !!
It is on France 24 and the Algerians have not denied so the news is true.

Back to APS news reports, well I am familiar with that crap of supporting the great president for life. I am Egyptian and I see and hear that talk 24/7.

Abdel Aziz Bouteflika who is currently 81-years-old suffered a stroke in 2013 and has been confined to a wheelchair since then.

And South Africa announced officially the death of its leader and hero Nelson Mandela. I do not know what to see or how I can express my sadness. It was a tough week back here in North East of Africa , in Egypt where young revolutionaries are sent to jails just like Mandela in his youth for protesting and Ahmed Fouad Negm dies . It was tough week indeed.

Nelson Mandela could be the most famous African leader known now in the Egyptian media unlike any other African leader. But even Mandela , what most people know about him in Egypt from the media is that he was the first African or rather black president to rule South Africa after years of whites’ rule .. oh and he was imprisoned many years before that and he got a Nobel Prize.That’s it.
The people do not know about his struggle nor about his experience in South Africa nor about the experience of the transitional period in South Africa. May Be if they truly know those things and try to learn from other countries’ experiences , things we would be different now in Egypt .

The question I ask myself now : How many years do we have to wait in Egypt till we have our Nelson Mandela in order to lead and inspire the people !? I swear to God we do not need another Nasser now but rather another Nelson Mandela for real.
I know that I suppose to write something about this world icon but instead I am speaking about my country because for me Mandela is associated with Freedom , democratic transitional rule, justice , hope and citizenship.

From two years ago , on that particular day a street vegetables vendor was slapped by a policewoman “she denies” in the City of Sidi Bou Zid on December 17,2010. That slap did not change that vendor’s world but rather the whole world. That slap led Mohamed Bou Azizi to torch himself sparkling the first flame of revolution that soon enough would transfer to other oppressed countries in the Arab world.
BY the way some Islamists consider Bou Azizi as an infidel because he set himself on fire as an act of suicide , well officially he lived after till January 8th ,2011 where he died in a hospital.

RIP General El Gohary

Here is a General whom everybody in my generation loves and remembers and yet he was not an army general but rather a football general.

Legendary football coach Mahmoud El Gohary has passed away earlier this morning in Jordan. The 74 years old coach already suffered from brain stroke and died clinically from two days ago but as a Muslim he was left on the machines till it was over.
May Allah bless your soul captain El Gohary as you brought happiness to millions of Egyptians. 

Hats Off Mekki

After hearing provoking and insulting rap from both Egypt and Algeria attacking each other , Ahmed Mekki ; Egyptian-Algerian Actor/director/rapper released this song which I believe should have been released earlier as it could help a lot in making both sides wake up from this stupidity.

Mekki is born for an Egyptian mother and Algerian father and he is the younger brother of TV actress Inas Mekki.

Mekki is from the most successful young comedians in Egypt right , his latest film was a box office hit.

The Algerian press claimed earlier from two weeks that Mekki were suffering for being an Algerian in Egypt ; the thing which he totally has denied , Mekki with my all respect is very popular and very well known with his Algerian roots in Egypt more than in Algeria which I believe has not been introduced fully to his films or his character H. El-Dabour.

Nous Sommes Tous Fatma, We Are All Fatma

Fatma Riahi aka Fatma Arabicca is a Tunisian blogger who was arrested on the 2nd of November 2009 by the criminal Brigade Gorjani in Tunis for defamation and  being the woman behind “Debat Tunise” blog !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strangely Fatma is the only one behind “Debat Tunise” in fact she is be behind it at all as the blog continued to post cartoons after arrest but what can you say !!??

Fatma’s blog as you can see has been closed despite according to the information I could find the 34 years old Tunisian blogger spoke only about her dreams in freedom of expression , of course this is considered as an insult and an attempt to rebel against Ben Ali !!

Tunisian bloggers believe that Fatima was arrested in an attempt to know the real names of those behind “Debat Tunise” blog , hopefully they will fail.
The trial of Fatma is expected to be next 9th of November
I am not really surprised at this , this is Tunisia under Ben Ali’s rule , it is not a strange thing , the strange thing is how the world watches in silence giving no damn , may be because I do not need to tell that Ben Ali is the West’s ally and he knows to play very well. Of course one day Ben Ali’s regime will be down and the Tunisian people will be free and remember those who supported that dictator and those who supported them for real. Believe people do remember very well.

An Insult To Humanity

I read the story of Ota Benga whom I believe that the Bronx Zoo should apologize for his terrible exploitation from more than 100 years ago !!

When you read the story of Ota Benga , you find it terribly sad and disgusting ; the poor man killed himself at the end after unpleasant life

Those human zoos were insult to humanity , I just can’t imagine how awful it is , do not tell time then was different and there were some white racists who believe in white supremacy evolution   !!
