صحافة القاهرة: عناوين الستينيات + صورة السيسي | مدونة محرري ياهو مكتوب - أخبار Yahoo مكتوب

The Op-ed is in Arabic only.

Talk about Egypt turning to Russia like the 1960's simply ignores the fact that it is not the 1960's in the rest of the world. Putin is not Khrushchev and while there is some rivalry between the US and Russia the Cold War is over. In the 1960's Africa was seen as an up-and-coming region in the wake of decolonization and the USSR was making a major effort to woo African countries like Egypt into its camp in the global struggle between capitalism and socialism. Now Russia is almost totally focused on its own 'near abroad' in the former USSR and Egypt is a borderline failed state. Russia is not interested in giving way a billion dollars worth of arms for nothing and Egypt has no way of paying with either money or political favors.
ReplyDeleteBut, even if it is unrealistic, I guess it is good propaganda. I mean, no Egyptian paper would dare publish the fact that Sisi is paying the Israel Lobby* to help him get back US aid. The channel would be shut down and the reporters sent off to be tortured in an hour. Better talk about Russia. I mean, they back Assad's crackdown so surely they'll back ours too, right?
