Babies of Gaza: Mostafa, son of Halima has a family and is recovering

Do you remember that baby from Al-Shifa Hospital’s premature babies in Gaza who lost his eye and his mom and arrived in Egypt alone to receive treatment?

Yes, it is him, and he is a cute little boy who was lucky to find his family after all.

Mostafa Qadoura in Gaza before evacuation and in Cairo after evacuation

His name is Mostafa Qadoura , the son of Halima Abd Rabou.

Babies of Gaza: Mostafa, son of Halima has a family and is recovering amazingly and happily.

When Mostafa Qadoura was just a week old, an Israeli airstrike on his home in northern Gaza’s Jabaliya in October 2013 launched him and his crib into the air.

Shrapnel pierced his right eye, damaging it beyond repair. Baby Mostafa was later found in his crib, meters away from the ruins of his home.

The strike killed his 4-year-old brother, Ayes, and severely injured his 22-year-old mother, Halima.

Mostafa was rushed to Al-Shifa Hospital’s neonatal unit but faced further medical challenges when the hospital itself came under shelling. Meanwhile, Halima was at another hospital in northern Gaza, where doctors were forced to amputate her leg. She also suffered life-altering injuries to her neck, chest, and eyes.

After being discharged, Halima moved into a large family home in Jabaliya. But tragedy struck again. As her son was being evacuated across borders to safety, an Israeli airstrike killed Halima, her 6-year-old son, Bassam, and 50 other family members on November 22, 2023.

The fate of Mostafa’s father remains unknown. Officially listed as missing, it is unclear whether his body has been recovered.

For a time, the remaining members of Mostafa’s family believed he had also perished—until his uncle stumbled upon a local news report mentioning an orphaned baby he suspected was Mostafa.

Gaza War : South Africa stands with Palestinians in Gaza dragging Israel to the Hague “Everything you need to know and not to know too”

South Africa has made history by being the first country to bring Israel, a state often criticized for disregarding numerous United Nations Security Council resolutions, to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The case is about the ongoing genocide in Gaza and it is going to kick off next week inshallah.

On Wednesday the ICJ announced that it will hold public hearings on the request for the indication of provisional measure submitted by South Africa in the African country’s case vs. Israel on 11 and 12 January.

South Africa has filed a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing it of violating the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide concerning Palestinians in Gaza.

As per a statement from the South African Presidency, the government decided in a special meeting on 8 December to approach the ICJ, also known as The Hague, to seek an order directing Israel to abstain from any actions that could be classified as genocide or a related crime under the aforementioned Convention.

Ramadan Arabian Nights 2023: Tale of Mando “Guilty Mando” #EP20

Ramadan Karim😀

Now, are you familiar with the history of One Thousand and One Nights?

The book was actually first mentioned in Arab Islamic history in the 9th century by the renowned historian Al-Masudi.

Dubbed Herodotus of the Arabs, he referenced in the year 947 a collection of mythical tales from Persia, India, and Greece, which was then known as "A Thousand Tales" or "A Thousand Nights."

Tonight, we have got the 482nd episode of "One Thousand and One Nights" radio show, with tonight's episode being the 20th night of the season.

But before we dive in, let's take a quick look back at last night's episode.

Ramadan Arabian Nights 2023: Tale of Mando “Love written in fate” #EP12

Ramadan Karim 😀

And we continue our tale for this year the tale of Mando.

Tonight, without any spoilers, the bride’s dowery in the Arab/Muslim culture is brought up. Unlike the common practice in India, in the Arab/Muslim culture, the groom is the one who presents a dowery to the woman.

I found out that many in the world whenever they read the word “dowery”, automatically think about the Indian practice and think Arabs and Muslims follow it. Well, it is vice versa in our place in the world.

Now we head to know how a certain “dowery” will play another important role in our tale for this year, the tale of Mando.

First, let’s refresh your memory and hear last night’s episode.

Second, here is the 12th night of our nights this year which is the 474th episode of the “One Thousand and One nights” Radio show.

Synopsis

In those days, the love of Wardshan and Mando blossomed and grew stronger. Mando opened up his heart and expressed his love to the Princess, and to his joy, Wardshan reciprocated her love for him.

Mando confided in Wardshan that he felt like they were connected in the spiritual realm even before they met in the physical world. Though their love was pure and true, their happiness was not to last long.

Kodak Agfa Presents : Photos of the year “2022 edition”

Another year-ender post I hope that inshallah it will be another tradition in Egyptian Chronicles: The photos of the year.

This is a subjective post because I chose those photos as my favourite for the year 2022, they represent major events in the year which I found significant and they are not too many.

They are without order. I apologize for that.

For me, this is the photo of the year 2022.

A four years old girl working in a brick factory in Afghanistan sleeping
after work on one August afternoon "AP"

That photo summarizes the Afghani ongoing forgotten tragedy.

It also represents everything that is wrong in this world my afraid on every level whether social injustice or economic injustice or political injustice.

The whole photo story is heartbreaking.

The photo story is available on AP and those sad photos were taken by photographer Ebrahim Noroozi.

I pray those children will have a better year and future this year.

I do not know the source of this photo or who actually took and I hope that he or she is okay because they are in China. It was taken in Shanghai during the anti- Zero-Covid-19 policy protests.

COP27 at Sharm : 1.5C fight , loss and damage at Santiago Network and some interesting numbers to share

The 27th session of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change “COP27” is going to conclude after hours following many other hours full of drama, political, and economic talks about the future of Planet Earth's environment in Egypt’s Sharm El-Sheikh.

At the loss and damage meeting in the COP27 on Wednesday in Sharm

In the past 48 hours, news reports came that we as people from the developing countries in the global South should not have our hope high because it seems the conclusions and recommendations as well as pledges of the globe North will be less impressive of the COP27 than the conclusions, recommendations and pledges announced in COP26.

According to official and unofficial sources openly and off the records there are divisions about issues including whether rich nations should set up a fund to cover irreparable damage being wrought by climate change, language addressing fossil fuels use and whether 1.5C should remain the explicitly targeted limit for planetary warming.

An Alarming economic news many ignored “Or did not notice” : Egypt’s Negative NFA

It is not a secret that Egypt is not in its best days economically. Already in case you do not know : Egypt’s Central Bank raised the key interest rate for the first time in 5 years by 1% leading the Egyptian pound to its sharpest drops against the US dollar in five years.

Egypt's Central Bank in Downtown Cairo
Egypt's Central Bank in Downtown Cairo

It has been a domino effect fall since then.

On 3 April, the latest Central Bank of Egypt “CBE” data showed that for the first time since God’s know when the Egyptian Net Foreign Assets “NFA” turned into negative value.

First of all, what is the meaning of the “Net Foreign Assets”?

Simply, the “Net Foreign Assets” or “NFA” are the banking system assets owed by non-residents minus liabilities.

Egypt at the end of #Tokyo2020 : Truly Historical Gold and Silver Medals in Karate Kumite and Modern Pantheon

Now, this is a finale for Tokyo 2020 Olympics that I love, all of us back in Egypt love to be precise. What I love in this finale is that we did not expect it all.

Egypt got Golden and Silver medals on Saturday in four hours only for the first time in Karate Kumite.

Karateka Feryal Abdel Aziz won the country’s gold medal in the final of the +61kg Karate Kumite and Modern Pantheon player won the silver medal in the game’s Individual category.

Both made history for the country for real.

Sadly no one paid attention to El-Gendy except when the news came from Tokyo that he won the Silver Medal and we knew more about the 21-years-old champion.

the last race in the Pantheon as the second

We knew now that the Al-Shams Club Pantheon champion already won the gold medal at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics and a bronze at the World Championship in Cairo earlier this year.

Needless to say, there is no real coverage for this important and hard sport in Egypt.

El-Gendy got Egypt’s first-ever medal as well as its first silver medal too in the Modern Pantheon thanks to El-Shams Club hardworking player.

Ahmed El-Gendy and his Silver medal in Tokyo

It is the country’s first Silver medal after four bronze medals in Taekwondo, Wrestling and Karate Kumite.

It is Egypt’s 11th silver medal in its Olympic record.

Moving to our Golden girl, Karateka Feryal Abdel Aziz who made history by all measures.

Karate Princess Feryal Abdel Aziz won her first gold medal when she defeated Azerbaijan’s Irina Zaresta in the final of the +61Kg Category on Saturday.

It was the greatest moment to see our Egyptian flag raised and our National Anthem played loud in the Tokyo Olympics after 17 years exactly in Athens Olympics

“This is the least thing I can present to Egypt, If I stay thanking God till the end of my life for this moment, it won’t be enough. This is the best moment in my life”

Our champion Feryal Abdel Aziz said proudly to the BeinTV channel, the exclusive broadcaster of the Olympics in the Arab world. “The Nasser Al-Khelaifi TV sports empire thankfully aired the game freely on Saturday. New generations won’t believe that we used to watch the Olympics for free for real in the past”

Here is the moment she won and please focus on her mother wearing blue “screaming” from Cairo’s Mataria “Oh my heart, oh my heart”.

“Thanks for my mother, for my mother for my mother, it is your achievement and not my achievement for real”

These are the words Feryal told Bein winning our hearts and minds in Cairo after securing a 5-4 victory over Kazakhstan's Sofya Berultseva in the semi-final.

Feryal’s mom is like many mothers who spent hours supporting their kids especially their girls while playing Karate in Egypt despite all hardships.

I know that scene of moms taking their kids to Karate lessons in the clubs, I grew up seeing it and it is still going strong.

It is a Gold medal for those moms and their little girls to pursue their dreams.

The 22-yeas-old is the first Egyptian woman to win an Olympic Gold in history.

She is also our fourth woman to win a medal in the Olympics.

It is the 8th Gold medal Egypt achieves in the Olympics

This is the first Gold Medal Egypt has scored since Wrestler Karam Gabr’s Gold medal in the men's Greco-Roman 96kg at the 2004 Athens Games.

The young pharmacist is the first Egyptian, African and Arab woman to win the Gold Medal in the +61 kg Karate Kumite in the Olympics.

Abdel Aziz is also considered the second Egyptian, African and Arab woman to win a medal in the Olympics in general in Karate Kumite after Giana Farouk who scored the bronze medal on Friday.

Egypt has won 6 medals in the Tokyo 2020; four bronze, one silver and one gold.

This is the biggest number of medals Egypt has ever won in the Olympics since 1928.

After our medal boost on Saturday, Egypt jumped in the Olympics Medal Count and We have become 53rd.

Some achievements we must mention

A special salute to Egypt’s National Handball team after losing to Spain in the Semi-Final in the Olympics.

They did not make it to the bronze but they made history as the first Arab/Egyptian team to reach a semi-final in the Olympics as well as the first Arab/Egyptian handball team to reach a semi-final in the Olympics.

It is a great achievement and raises from the Egyptian national handball which has established itself worldwide as a strong team.

A huge salute to the handball boys especially their captain Ahmed Al-Ahmar who announced that he would quit playing internationally following the Olympics.

Thanks, Captain Al-Ahmar, you are an Egyptian GAOT for real.

People were not paying attention to El-Gendy because they were following the Handball game

Good luck to our athletes and thanks to our medalists. We are waiting for better results and more medals inshallah in Paris 2024.

26-years-old Egyptian Karate fighter Giana Farouk claimed the bronze medal of the Women’s Karate Kumite’s –61kg event after losing by Hantei 1-1 to the Chinese Karate Fighter Xiayan Yin who got the silver medal later.

The Karate Egyptian queen made a true history in Tokyo.

Giana Farouk is the first Egyptian, Arab, Muslim and African woman to win a medal in the Olympics in Karate Kumite.

Thanks to Al-Ahly Club Karate Fighter, Karate Kumite is the 8th game Egypt scored a medal in it since the launch of the Olympics.

Egypt in the second week of #Tokyo2020 : A new Bronze medal in Wrestling this time

Egypt has scored its third medal in Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Wednesday and it feels good again after really depressing results.

23-years-old Mohamed Ibrahim El-Sayed aka Kesho won the bronze medal of the Greco-roman 67kg event after beating the 2018 World Champion Artem Surkov of Russia Russian Olympic Committee.

Egypt in the first week of #Tokyo2020 Olympics : 2 Bronze medals so far

On the fourth day of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Egypt scored two medals in not more than 20 minutes.

Yup, Egypt scored the bronze medals in Taekwondo on Monday in less than 20 minutes to be precise.

Our fantastic Taekwondo fighter Hedaya Malak secured the first Tokyo medal for Egypt after beating Paige Mcpherson of USA 17-6 while competing for a bronze medal of the 67kg event.

After ten minutes of Malak’s victory, our Taekwondo fighter Seif Issa won the second bronze medal for Egypt after beating Andre Richard Ordemann of Norway 12-4 in the Men -80kg Bronze Medal Contests on Monday.

It was a relief after three days of ongoing and unfortunate losses and disqualification to have those bronze medals.

20 minutes made millions of Egypt happy for real after huge disappointment in the first three days.

Now I am happy Hedaya Malak got a medal in Tokyo 2020. It is her second medal in the Olympics after her bronze medal in Rio 2016.

Ever Given Saga Continues : Tugging against time “Latest Suez canal crisis updates”

Up till now Gigantic Ever Given container ship is blocking not only Egypt’s Suez canal but also at least 10% of the world trade.

So far on Saturday evening the attempts to tug Ever Given continued using the high tide with 14 tugboats joining forces.

There has been no official statement from the Suez Canal Authority “SCA” about the progress of this attempt but some believe Saturday night may not be our lucky night.

The latest photo of Ever Given Saturday evening The latest photo of Ever Given Saturday evening
The latest photo of Ever Given Saturday evening

The Chairman of the SCA Vice Admiral Osama Rabea held a press conference Saturday afternoon to share with the media and the world the latest developments concerning the big ship.

Here are the most important points Rabea said.

  • 321 vessels are currently stuck at the Suez canal.
  • It will take 48 hours after “unblocking the canal” for those vessels to leave the canal.
  • Currently, those vessels are receiving all needed logistics and support from SCA.
  • The wind and the dust storm are not the main cause the vessel to run aground as it was claimed earlier
  • The cause of this disaster is still being investigated.
  • Before this disaster, the SCA used to achieve USD 12 million as revenue on a daily basis.
  • It is unclear how much time it will take to solve this problem but the SCA is working day and night.
  • No casualties or pollution have been caused by Ever Given.
  • He thanked the countries that offered help including the United States, China and UAE.

Kodak Agfa presents : Ramadan lanterns 2020 in time of Coronavirus

Ramadan Kareem 🏮

This is my annual Kodak Agfa post dedicated to the beautiful Ramadan Lanterns of Egypt.
This is the Coronavirus year and it affected the Lanterns market and Lanterns workshops badly.

This year the famous Sayida Zeinab’s Ramadan Makeshift is not held at El-Sadd street and it is a big blow to the vendors from all over Egypt participating in Cairo’s biggest seasonal informal market.

Egyptian Handmade Ramadan Lanterns for sale in Cairo

Due to the outbreak of Coronavirus in the country, the Municipality refused to grant the vendors permission to hold the market. The government already issued decisions to suspend informal markets in Egypt to Curb the spread of Coronavirus.

Already it closed down Al-Sayida Zeinab Mosque and shrine in front of visitors and suspend her Moulid in Mid-March.

Egypt's El-Sayida Zeinab Mosque
El-Sayida Zeinab Mosque is completely closed down since Mid March

I went there from three weeks ago in the morning as during then Egypt had a curfew from 7 PM to 6 AM. The Sadd street did not host the makeshift market but the Lanterns vendors held small, fragmented makeshift stands throughout the street

Good will prevail eventually : We can fight Coronavirus Asian Xenophobia in Egypt "Updated"

I was going to write a very angry post about this sad incident that happened to an Asian man from a couple of days ago and make some noise so Uber can do an action to correct partially what has happened.

The story started with a video and a couple of photos showing some ride-hailing app driver dropping an Asian man in the middle of the Ring high way while covering his nose and mouth.

Wednesday afternoon, news came that the Egyptian authorities arrested the driver who dropped the Asian man and the man who filmed the incident as the story went viral. Both men have been detained four pending investigation on Thursday per the orders of general persecution.

I am really sorry for the Asian man either ways.

The man who filmed the whole incident was actually mocking and making fun of that Asian man who could not find help.

The man who filmed the clip is rude if I may say.

It was a sad video that makes you feel sorry about how Egyptian society has become or to be accurate how some Egyptians have become.

Luckily, many denounced the video online and attacked the driver and the video shooter who had to close down his Facebook account because people attacked him.

Now the truly good news for real was that a group of Egyptians found the young man and apologized to him

Coronavirus on the Nile : New 12 cases in Egypt "Updated"

Just from a couple of minutes ago, Egypt’s Health Ministry and World Health Organization “WHO” announced the discovery of 12 new cases that test positive to Coronavirus raising the number of discovered the Novel Coronavirus in the country to 15 cases.

The 12 cases are for Egyptians who work on a Nile Cruise coming from Aswan to Luxor.
Corona ad
An old ad for Egypt's famous Corona
Hot Chocolate

The “index case” of this outbreak was the US-Taiwanese tourist who was on the board of the cruise who was discovered in the United States and according to the news report, she did not only transmit the virus to the 12 Egyptians but to two US tourists on the same cruise who returned back to the States.

This outbreak shows that the virus has nothing to with the warm weather because Luxor and Aswan are usually warmer than the rest of the county in the time of that cruise.

The Egyptian MOH stated that all the people who dealt with the index case have been placed under quarantine for 14 days and they showed no symptoms but after conducting PCR tests, 12 Egyptian workers were tested positive and have been placed under more medical restricted quarantine.

Now officially the number of people infected by the virus since its outbreak jumped into 15 cases in Egypt.

The first case was for a Chinese citizen who was cured while the second case was a Canadian citizen working in the oil sector and currently is under quarantine.

Novel Coronavirus in Egypt : Time to address anti-Asian racism "Updated

In case you do not know, Egypt’s ministry of health and the World Health Organization declared in a joint statement that the first confirmed case of the Novel Coronavirus was detected in the country on Friday.

According to the details that surfaced later, a patient is a Chinese man who arrived in Cairo from China on Thursday and was spotted at Cairo International airport.

He was taken to the quarantine hospital aka Al-Nagila General Hospital in the border governorate to stay there for two weeks or till recovery according to the procedures.

This is the first confirmed case in Africa and honestly earlier Friday I saw comic that Africa was the only Coronavirus continent and people were sharing that comic on Facebook to brag.
Here is the result of bragging.
Anyhow  I will speak now about something that bothers me.

A pharmacist in Zamalek bragged to my aunt on Friday that his pharmacy in the upscale neighborhood refuses to serve Asians !!

On the same day, I found out that Taxis and some Uber captains refuse to serve Asians for fear they turned to be Chinese.

On Saturday, I was shocked to know that a Chinese restaurant in Maadi said it explicitly that Chinese people were not allowed to dine in !!

Egyptian Chronicles’ Shakers and Movers of 2019

Okay, I am trying to keep an annual event in Egyptian Chronicles.

Here is my list of those I believe that have been the shakers and movers of 2019.
I started writing down this post at 3:22 PM, yes it is my epic procrastination for the year. Since October I have been suffering this bloody procrastination

This is not the list of the top people but rather those made an impact whether positive or negative based on my own views
This list is without any order. These names were the ones that came into my mind in those few hours.

Locally

Egyptian shakers 2019
Mohamed Ali, Soroya Mohamed, Mohamed Salah, Alaa Abdel Fattah
  • The few Egyptian protesters who surprised everybody including the Egyptians themselves and the world in September.
  • Mohamed Ali, the former 15-years-civilian army contractor/one-time actor and producer/real estate developer/self-exiled/whistleblower/opposition figure. From where shall I start? There is no doubt that the 45-years-old man whom many Egyptians did not know before shook and moved things in Cairo like none other. He was like the danger that the regime has not ever thought about. The street smart guy in self-exiled unleashed a shock wave that Egyptian activists are paying its price a crackdown. Yet on another popular level, some members of the working class look to him as the anti-hero who made enough noise to disturb the upper class and government as some said. Ali’s wave lessened in December but he returned back with some Document to bring together the Egyptian opposition allegedly. He got less audience than before but he is officially there and can’t be ignored or disregarded after all he reached segments revolutionary intelligentsia failed to reach.
  • Wael Ghonim and his return as well his complete change representing what the last nine years of social and political bullying can turn you. Ghonim is having a comeback online with constant vlogging discussing his thoughts. He is not your old Wael Ghonim but rather a new version of that Egyptian activist the world knew. “P.S: in case you do not know Wael Ghonim’s brother apolitical dentist Hazem Ghonim was released from detention last week”.
  • MP Ahmed Tantawy, the opposition voice in the Egyptian parliament whom many suspect to be another fake décor
  • A group of Egyptian journalists who remind me that this profession is not dead yet in Egypt and there is more to present and I got many names starting with the Mada Masr team, investigative journalist Ahmed El-Shamy, videographer Mostafa Darwish and Egypt’s only Pulitzer winners AP journalist Maggie Michael and Nariman El-Mofty who have not been honored yet by the Egyptian journalists syndicate as far as I know.
  • Egyptian basketballer Soroya Mohamed aka the new Queen Cleopatra who was chosen among the world's best players in 2019. She is also Rami Malak’s Muslim Twin sister.

It took one tweet from Mesut Ozil to remind the World with the China’s Uighurs

We must thank Arsenal footballer Mesut Ozil for breaking that silence and speaking about this huge elephant in the room aka China’s Persecution to Uighur Muslim ethnicity.
With one Tweet, the German Turkish Muslim Ozil managed to bring the media attention as it should especially on a popular level.

In that tweet in Turkish, the popular Arsenal footballer spoke about the persecution of the Uighur Muslim minority in China sending his greetings to the brothers resisting the Chinese government and its practices.
I do not care if Ozil cared only for the Uighurs because of their ethnicity or religion only. I do not care if he supports Erdogan’s policies.
I only care that he broke that huge silence including the official silence in the Muslim government.
On the contrary, the AKP voted down a suggestion in the Turkish parliament to discuss the Chinese government’s practices against the Uighurs, who are a Turkic ethnic group.
Already Turkey’s Erdogan and his Islamist party AKP do not find anything wrong about China and its policies.
  Muset Ozil of Arsenal
Muset Ozil of Arsenal
Those systematic policies have been documented by the UN human rights experts in the past two years including those shameful internment camps under the disguise of counter-terrorism and radicalization laws and policies.
