The people of Damitta are continuing to impress me , I do not know why the media does not give them enough attention , what they are doing never has been done in Egypt before publicly in that civilized way.
Their rejection to have a chemical factory in their beautiful resort town Ras El-Bar. Check back the background of this story here.
Now here are the developments and updates concerning this case:
Agrium factory is a joint venture. The owners of this doomed factory is Agruim that owns 60% of the project , the blessed public companies EChem and EGas own 24% of the project {owned by the Egyptian Government}, GASCO the national operator of gas distribution grid owns 9% and the rest 7% is owned by Arab Petroleum Investment Corporation {APICORP} . Agruim will be the exclusive marketer of the nitrogen products exported from this facility. The nitrogen products are used in fertilizers. The construction of this factory is not finished yet it will be finished and fully operated in 2010.
Here is the Press release from Agrium company concerning the factory in 2007
Now I want to say something Agrium , the Canadian fertilizers producing company is destroying our environment , is destroying one of our historical oldest resorts that was going to be chosen as a natural preserve, they are taking advantage from a third world country ruled by a corrupted regime it is not fair and it is acceptable.
Agruim is saying that through its fertilizers our food problem will be solved in their ad in a very stupid disrespectful way because they know if we were a democratic country they would not have taken the approval on establishing this ugly factory .
Yes we are third world poor country but we deserve to have a nice resort inherited from our ancestors that we want to leave it clean to our decedents

Now here are the developments and updates concerning this case:
- The professors of Cairo University denied that they issued a research in the favour of the factory. That alleged report claims that the factory does not have any effect on the environment; the professors from Cairo University, Helwan University and Ain Shams University all agreed that the factory should not have been built in this place and should be closed immediately in order to save the environment.
- The people of Helwan sent another statement to President Mubarak to declare its public refusal after their first statement last week ; the Statement is called Statement No.2
- Agrium fertilizers ; the owner of the factory published whole page colored ads in three newspapers including daily Al Masry Al Youm .yesterday saying that the factory has no side effect on environment stressing the importance of this factory to the agriculture wealth of Egypt !!!
- The people of Damitta across the Governorate hanged black cloth flags and labels in their windows and balconies , these black cloths flags and labels are written on it their total refusal to the project , this is the first time something like this to happen.
- It turned out that the ministry of environment wanted to announce Ras El-Bar as a Natural Preserve from two years ago !!
- The Prime minister is thinking of transferring the factory from Damitta to either Ras Sadr "another pollution to a very beautiful flourish new tourist attraction" or Suez "As if the city needs another pollutant factory as if the Oil industries there are not enough"
