Internet censorship in Egypt : If it were useful to Ben Ali !! #Jan25

Good news people : Twitter is back online in Egypt , you can access it directly with proxies or web applications at least in TE Data network. Also, the Facebook is back online.
Our wise regime though that by imitating the stupid Ben Ali regime and imposing online censorship they will control the people’s anger and will make the people stop protesting !!
Well, online censorship did not stop the Tunisians who really suffered for years from this stupid censorship and despite the important role the Facebook played in mobilizing or rather organizing the Day of Anger #Jan25 yet who said that people only revolt thanks to social networks !!? As far as I know there was no social network in 1919 or in 1977 !!??
Now bad news the connections are so slow in a stupid way , I do not understand what is going on actually.
Of course, up till now the original Dostor newspaper website is blocked in Egypt and we can’t access it without a proxy software.
We are Egyptians and one of our characteristics we know how to find our ways around trouble , here are bunch of ways to overcome any future blockage from any kind :
  • Proxies , proxies , proxies
Download and use proxy software like Hot spot Shield or Tor browser or Ultra reach or Foxy Proxy for FF
  • Twitter web applications
You can use twitter web applications like Ping.FM and Seesmic web applications
The internet is back but it is slow so I think the regime is messing with our bandwidth , fine.
What the regime is facing is not the result of the social network revolution but rather the results of its corrupted stupid policies in the past 30 years.

  1. I've been using proxies al day, they are so stupid and their censorship is totally useless. I really liked what you said about 1919 and 1977.

    Great job :).

  2. Hi Zeinobia,

I know that there are a lot of problems with media and communications in Egypt but I just wanted to let you know that (here in Britain, at least), news of what is happening is very much getting through - it's on the main front pages tomorrow and all the tv/radio bulletins.

I also wanted to say thank you so much for all the updates - your posts are informative and evocative, and better than any official news source.

Stay safe and keep up the good work,
    L.

  6. I have not had a connection problem at all since early yesterday with either Twitter or FB. Also, just got onto Dostor, but sorry I don't read Arabic. I'm wondering if these censorship problems are being directed at certain areas/neighborhoods of Cairo, where demonstrations are more likely to occur. Yesterday afternoon my connection came to a crawl, but that's pretty much been the only problem I've had for the past 24 hours.

Keep up the posts. I look forward to reading your reports and links.

    Take care!

  7. update: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has sent his defense minister Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi in secret to Washington to ask for US backing for his embattled regime against the street protest movement which gained in violence on its second day, Wednesday, Jan. 26.

  8. I have never felt so upset about not being able to log onto Twitter because someone up there decided we weren't allowed to go on. I haven't felt like that since my kindergarten days. Net is still slow, so is twitter. Al Masry Al Youm interestingly posted an article that says the gov. released a statement that they had nothing to do with blocking these sites from us..so who did then? SubhanAllah. Al Sabr!
