Regarding Lara Logan Again

Yes I am opening the file of Lara Logan again because it should not be closed till the rights of this lady return back , even if she was only beaten not sexually harassed or assaulted.Lara Logan was our guest and doing her job and among the true Egyptian values is “we put the guest in our eyes” as we say it in Egypt.
Some incidents should not be wrapped by a press release from CBS or statement from the White house especially that Egypt has suffered in recent years from the sexual harassment epidemic , the file should not closed.
I received many comments on Lara Logan’s post and these comments made me more persistent to discuss the matter and not let it go. Unfortunately many comments were not angry for Lara as much as they were racist and hateful , I did not delete them to show the amount of racism there. I receive comments incriminate the whole race of Muslims and Arabs , I receive comments from the kind “We were happy for you but not any more” , “Arabs have a long way for democracy and civilization” I know that these people do not really care about Lara Logan as a woman or a human being as much they found a golden opportunity to attack Arabs and Muslims and restore the old perceptions about them. It is enough to read this headline in one of the websites “Happy Egyptians rape Lara Logan !!” and to know that Glenn Beck is using the incident of Lara to justify his sick and miserable theories about the Egyptian revolution using the green board just like Qaddafi in 1970s  to understand what is going on.
Ironically these people , these websites and also Glenn Beck are only angry because she is working for an American network and also white but on the other they are so silent on the rape crimes committed by U.S soldiers against Iraqi women. If you are human rights champion , women’s rights advocate then you must mention both incidents as matter of principle. Also the right wing blames Lara for being too sexy for her job !!  “and you thought it was only the East !!”  Well I am sorry but Glenn Beck and O’Reilly are too damn cowards to go in to hot zones.
Any woman in Egypt or in the world actually can be here place and it has nothing to do with being foreign or being white or being Muslim , it could happen to an American lady in the States itself , it could happen to me in Egypt.
I really want the Egyptian authorities to open an investigation about this matter not because Lara was  foreigner or because the White house demanded so or because the reputation of Egypt but because what happened was wrong and against the law. The words “Sex assault” are huge despite the fact that according to Wall Street Journal on February 15,2011 there was no rape unlike what the right wing websites claim. I think a proper investigation will end this debate for good.
Of course we need more details in an investigation like this , the general details are not enough. The general details about Lara Logan’s attack was in NY Post based on Sunday Times’ recount. According to Sunday Times Lara Logan was attacked , stripped from her cloth and beaten by flags plastic poles all over her body by a mob of 200 men. She was saved a group of strong Egyptian ladies followed by a group of soldiers. I hope these women come and speak to the media because they are heroes especially those who gave her cloth , calmed her down and escorted her to the Four Seasons. I do not think Lara was too strong to go to the Four Seasons Nile Plaza in that shape alone according to what I understand from Sunday Times’ story  posted on February 21st. The authorities should to speak to those ladies and also that group of army soldiers. The authorities should also speak to those who claimed to witnessed the attack.
Speaking about the witnesses , I do not understand why those few witnesses are being bullied online simply because their testimony contradicts the CBS News statement . For example the very interesting post by Mexican freelance journalist Témoris Grecko which includes his testimony and the others’ testimonies from Tahrir square especially those who claimed to witness the attack. According to Gecko she was roughed up only and according to another American tourist who made it very clear that he did not know what happened to Lara before seeing her, Lara’s clothes were not torn up and she was not actually accompanied by ladies but rather young men who formed some sort of human chain around her till they reached to the army post.  Grecko also included two other testimonies that supported him.He deleted a third testimony as the witness was being attacked online. Now Grecko is being labeled as yellow journalist !!
For the record I found a similar testimony in the comments of Youm 7 , yes I know Youm 7 and its comments but I found it very interesting because it is also close to what Grecko wrote in his website , that angry mob gathered around her yelling agent and Israeli then one soldier and couple of men protected her till she was reached to the army post.
In any proper investigation or any case in front of any court all stories , all testimonies and all eye witnesses must be included .These witnesses and their testimonies will be recorded in any investigation carried on by the Egyptian government because the law says so. I know that I will be attacked thought !!
If there will be an investigation in Egypt , I think Lara must be cooperative with the authorities to help them with more details. Already the fact that she left the country immediately without being treated in a hospital for fear , anger and distrust is not good. I understand she was scared especially that she was detained earlier, no wonder she left immediately.
Needless to say  whether it was a rough up or or sexual assault or a mix “ I think that this is actually what happened is a mix ” , knowing that the state security was “and is still” messing up in the country , I will not be surprised to know that this was a deliberate attack may be not on Lara but on any foreign journalist. I said before and I will say it again.
In almost all the incidents that were recorded from attack on journalists whether foreign or local was that rumor that this reporter were Israeli or that reporter were an agent for foreign powers spreading like the fire. In the past few days with the exposure of the State security files and also methods “their last attempt to turn us against the army” , we have become more and more certain from this. The blame is also on the Egyptian national TV to of inciting hate in the Egyptian society with its systemic claim against foreign reporters or foreigners in general before anyone. The fact that the Egyptian national TV has not apologized or admitted yet this makes me angry.
We do not deny  that we got a major problem called sexual harassment, Egyptian people were the first to document and expose to the world the sexual harassment problem in Egypt with videos and photos , we are not hiding it.  If you are follower to the blog from old time , you will know that we have been vocal about it and honestly I began to believe neglecting this problem from the security part was another tactic to make us afraid and also to divert our attention.
Now Al Masry Al Youm English surprised me by this report “ Planned Tahrir demo for sexually assaulted US reporter sparks controversy” , already  the words “Widespread opposition” are inaccurate considering the fact most of the people did not know that there was a planned protest for her nor there were Facebook pages dedicated to her from Egypt. I agree with the women’s rights activists , if we are going to have a protest then it will be for women in general , it is enough what happened last Tuesday.  “Actually that FB page mentioned in report is making her the hero of the revolution !! The fact that it has got links from right wing websites made uncomfortable “
I will try to raise the matter in the Egyptian media not because if the White House demanded this or because the right wing that should go to hell considers us savages whom Mubarak knew how to deal with but because this is the true Egyptian values that want to restore back after 30 years of Mubarak’s rule.
Update : Check out this very important op-ed from Agnes Rajacic in Al Ahram online.

I think she was very brave to give an interview on this, and since she has spoken, that's good enough for me. Let's put this thread to rest and hope that Lara can get on with her life. I for one wish her all the best.

Excerpts for those doubting she was actually raped:

"I didn't even know that they were beating me with flagpoles and sticks and things, because I couldn't even feel that. Because I think of the sexual assault, was all I could feel, was their hands raping me over and over and over again. ...Yea. From the front, from the back. ... They were tearing my body in every direction at this point, tearing my muscles, and they were trying to tear off chunks of my scalp. ...And that's when I said, "Okay, it's about staying alive now. I have to just surrender to the sexual assault. What more can they do now? They're inside you everywhere." So the only thing to fight for, left to fight for, was my life. ...[upon being dragged by some women] I wasn't safe yet, because the mob was still trying to get at me. But now it wasn't just about me anymore. It was about their women and that was what saved me, I think. ...Finally, finally some soldiers fought their way through the crowd with batons, beating the mob back, and that was the moment I thought, "I have a chance to get out of here alive." And I grabbed the first soldier and I did not let him go. ... [later, in the hospital] My muscles were so unbelievably sore, because they were literally stretched from the mob trying to tear my limbs off my body. My joints, every joint in my body was distended. And then they, the more intimate injuries, the injuries, the tearing inside. And the mark of their hands, their fingers all over my body, cuts and everything you could imagine. But no broken bones."

    - She does say she was raped (not groped) with hands "from the front and from the back" which, I'm assuming means both vaginally and anally penetrated. She had tearing "inside" so, obviously, she was violently penetrated. She goes on to say, once they'd done this already, she was only concerned with staying alive so she surrendered to the sexual assault (and rape?) - Gap. - Later, she describes being dragged near a group of women who intervened. - Gap. - Later, she describes being saved by soldiers. I have a feeling she left a lot of the story out or that CBS left out a lot of the more lurid and unnesisary details. She did say people were taking pictures with their cell phones. It may be that video will surface. It was every bit the horrific attack we've been telling you it was so stop trying to deny it.

To continue to deny she was raped at this point is nonsensical. It happened, people. And, guess what, she survived it. You didn't destroy her. She's back and she's as strong and sweet and honorable as she ever was. You failed. She won.

  6. Well, now we've seen the 60 Minutes video. There is now some context in which Zeinobia's statement

"Rape and sexual harassments happen in every place in the world including the United States itself if I am not mistaken. Rapists and sexual harassers believe or not got no specific religion or nationality in the book"

can be appraised. Here's the difference, Z. In the West women are taught that if you're in a sexually dangerous situation, you seek a crowded place and scream for help. She learned that in Egypt that doesn't work -- that screaming for help has the opposite effect.

In America women are not sexually at risk in crowds. In America women don't worry that if someone yells "Jew! Israeli!" at them the crowd will set upon them. (Or "Muslim!", lest you miss the point.)

This is a difference between America and Egypt. I prefer the American way.

  14. This isn't about whether or not Egypt will find democracy. They will find it (they may have already, depending on how this new government plays out) and we should hope all of mankind should finds such liberty and justice whether they deserve it or not.

Wishing Islamic people death or cursing them over wishing that they join the rest of the world in respecting the rights of all women and all races with their laws and customs (wishing them progress) is just disturbing. Why would you wish that any country remain in the dark concerning human rights? Why would you wish such eternal conflict on the world? How does that benefit anyone? How does that avenge your loved ones or the victims in any way?

The war in Iraq has been about defeating totalitarianism. The war in Afghanistan has been about fighting terrorism. We are not at war with Islamic people. This isn't a religious war. We are at war with oppression. We are at war with extremism. It's entirely possible that the peaceful factions of Islam could overshadow the violent factions in the near future and bring an Islamic awakening all over the world. It's entirely possible for our religions to co-exist if people will allow for unbiased and logic-based secular justice systems and equality in government.

I'm on Lara's side but I am not in agreement with those of you gloating and disrespecting the people who fought for freedom and progress in Egypt. This revolution was a huge step forward for an already great people (perhaps the oldest major civilization on the planet).

A crime was committed. Hopefully, the voice of this brave victim will go a long way toward changing attitudes and emboldening women all over the world. I hope the followers of Islam will start embracing the religions more peaceful precepts and abandon violence. If that can't happen then maybe it's time to abandon Islam to the scrap heap with the rest of the ancient religions that failed us but there is no reason to believe Islam can't become a peaceful religion as a whole. I mean, it didn't happen for Christianity until the middle of the 20th century and we're still working on it. Why condemn Islam when representatives of our own religion have committed so many atrocities throughout the centuries? Why not hope they join us in abandoning our former attitudes toward women and "infidels" and slaves and heretics?

It wasn't until the 20th century that Christianity started embracing equal rights and it only did because of the influence of the progressive secular political movements of the day and because of the effects of two world wars on humanity. America's civil rights movement came about not because of religion (there have been many sincere Christians on both sides of the Civil War and both sides of every civil rights issue) but, instead, because of democracy, because of a government based on the desire of a people to be free of former religious oppression in Europe. We got a taste of freedom and took off from there.

    ReplyDelete
  15. [continued]

This incident is not about condemning Islam. Stop making it about that. It's still not clear whether the attack was carried out by representatives of the former regime, gangs from the suburbs, random street punks or wilding protesters. Those who attacked her will probably never be identified or brought to justice. The only justice we can hope for is that Egypt will become more democratic and that their laws will establish a more peaceful and safe civilization for all men and women and that Egypt's government will join the modern nations (not the Christian nations, the modern nations) in the great progress we're all hoping to achieve in bringing happiness and liberty to every man, woman and child.

Suffering exists in every corner of the world. Those of you who have argued that things like this don't happen in America need to read about the Richmond High School gang rape, the gang rape of Jamie Leigh Jones by KBR employees, the 2002 sexual assaults during Mardis Gras, the rape suits currently before congress concerning women in the military, all of those gang rapes at frat parties, wilding in NYC, and the recent gang rape of an 11 year old girl in Texas. These things happen. There are criminals all over the world. There are rapists in America. Our culture is far from perfect. We've just now started treating women fairly (according to our laws) in this past 50 years. Why would anyone wish that women in other countries continue to suffer under archaic regimes?

God, any god you like, bless Egypt. I hope they become a better country for women than America is right now (in spite of religion or culture or any other factor). I hope they establish laws that grant freedom and liberty to the poor, power to the weak, and justice for all victims and all people. I hope that for the whole world. That's my dream.

The right thing to do here is fight for progress for all women in all nations. This incident shouldn't further divide us. It should teach us and inform us. We should all work together to make the world better.

But, yea, until that happens, I'm not going to let any woman I love visit a bat-shit crazy Muslim country that rapes people just for being white. You guys need to fix that shit. Assholes.

  16. I have a feeling Logan defied her superiors (like she did in Iraq, going rogue and embedding herself with a group of SEALS without telling her superiors) and snuck into Egypt on her own terms against the network's advice, the U.S. embassy's advice and the advice of the Egyptian government.

You just don't march through the streets of a bloody revolution like it's a party. She wasn't just in Egypt; she was smack in the middle of the lawless throes of a birthing nation and the last gasps of a dying totalitarian regime. Anything could have happened in that crowd. I'm not blaming her, she thought it was worth the risk, but this incident can't be blamed on anything but the circumstances and the heartlessness of the individual men involved.

Sexual harassment in Egypt is in the 80 percents. It's also in the 80 percents in America. As long as there are vicious men there will be rape. It's sad that this happened to such a noble soul and I hope it inspires a sense of compassion and solidarity from women around the world and understanding among all of mankind. I hope we see progress because of this and I hope she inspires courage in victims and stands as an example of a survivor and overcomer for all people.

But, listen, this happened because she was in a bloody civil war zone. Not because all Egyptian men are animals. The world was upside down that night. That's not an excuse but it is what it is, she was taken advantage of by a band of vicious crazy dudes who thought/knew they could get away with doing whatever they wanted at that moment. It's a shame that any group of men would become so vicious but these things happen in every society. It was a vicious and cruel act and we should do everything we can to stop things like this from happening to women around the world.

  17. At no point do you accept that part of the problem is in your culture and the way you treat women, that is the reason why you force your women to wear a towel over their heads. You also seem to misunderstand how genuinely angry this makes people, and blame the reactions on racism, it is the other way around, this stuff makes people racists. We should just let you kill each other...

  20. French to English translation Part I
Rue89 heard testimony exclusive of physician and soldier who fought against Lara Logan a hundred Egyptians.

February 11, away from Tahrir Square in Cairo, a few hours after announcing the resignation of Hosni Mubarak, Lara Logan, an American journalist for CBS, is molested, assaulted by a hundred men.

Two weeks later, Omar Weshahy young doctor instead of revolutionary and witnessed the assault, Ahmed Salah me this, the soldier who has destroyed the reporter of a crowd without mercy.

It described her ordeal Thursday in the "60 minutes" of his chain, breaking the silence surrounding this shameful episode of the Egyptian revolution. We can now publish the evidence, exclusive of those who saved it.
Lara Logan: "Do not worry, I'm a war reporter"

This evening of February 11, Egyptians celebrate a historic moment and unexpected, in a triumphant mood. Despite the crush, Omar Weshahy notices the blonde reporter, even elegant jacket jogging near the makeshift hospital where he is. It is surrounded by men, attracted by one of the few to Visiting Tahrir that evening, which request for photos. Lara Logan is ready to gambling

But the young doctor of 27 years, employed at the Cairo University Hospital, spent 18 days and 15 nights on the famous and according to him, these Egyptians "did not really look like revolutionaries." Also, he knows his country, where sexual harassment is widespread.

It then calls the journalist to recommend to beware of these men, who assures him there, want to touch it. But, accustomed to warmer lands, Lara Logan, 39, replied:

"Do not worry, I'm a war reporter. "

Omar feels that the situation can quickly degenerate and asks a friend to convince Lara to join them. What she ends up doing. But the doctor, like all revolutionaries that night, is still reeling from the euphoria and running around.

A few minutes later, the young man in a white coat realizes that "the American" left the scene. He will find nearly 45 minutes later, surrounded by hundreds of people "hungry".
On a tank, a soldier accused of a "huge fight"

Lara Logan and his team stop for a moment on the spot when the battery from the camera off. This is where the "fixer" Egyptian group heard men say will strip the journalist. Within moments, the situation becomes uncontrollable and Lara Logan disappears beneath a mob fury.

The few men who take the party were soon joined by dozens of others. Mobs extremely fast and impressive, often out of curiosity, well known to those who participated in one of many events Tahrir Square.

Ahmed Salah (left in photo below), posted on his car near the museum of Cairo, surrounded by thousands of people, is finally accused by the military police that a "huge fight" broke out.

The soldier then joined the center square. Another soldier, Ahmed El Wakil (right in photo above), managed earlier to escape the crowds and the producer of Lara to get away, inside the museum Cairo.

When it is totally freaked out, past the hospital and starts shouting "My friend! my friend! "Omar has someone else is hidden in the crowd. More than 200 men by the young doctor.

With three colleagues, he then joined the herd and distinguishes Ahmed Salah, he knows and has already treated for the revolution.
Crowd: "Israel is a spy! "

The young soldier decided to "compete in the job and, despite the blows, manages to reach the frightened journalist, he found naked, her clothes torn violently unleashed by the hands of furious men. A late arrival but saving.

  21. Part II
The journalist revealed in the interview given to his television station that she had to "focus to stay alive." His torture lasted for about twenty-five minutes.

Omar, who witnessed the scene, is in shock. He is preparing to hand him his coat but a young woman removes her black abaya to cover reporter, out of strength.

Ahmed then Lara Logan is on his back and hurries to his car, followed by the cheering crowd. Once in the military vehicle, Lara is placed inside, but the human tide continues to call the journalist and camped around the tank. Some shake it, others try to enter. Many shouted: "This is an Israeli spy! "

Finally, after fifteen minutes, providing soldiers to the crowd as the woman left the scene desired. Omar pretends to go away. The crowd, probably exhausted by his folly, and scattered attention once settled, a military police car gets Lara and his team to bring them back to their hotel.
Ahmed, the soldier: "It has nothing to do with the revolution! "

Omar Ahmed found standing in tears. He did not return:

"How can they do that to a woman, it has nothing to do with the revolution! "

It then takes the soldier in the Egyptian Museum for examination. Beaten by the crowd, he suffered testicular trauma. And psychological trauma is no less. Two weeks after this terrible attack, Ahmed, quiet and humble, yet acknowledge the fact.

He saw things during the revolution but still do not understand how men could strive with such savagery on a woman. He also said embarrassed and angry that this case has given a bad image of Egypt.

That is the view of many young revolutionaries moreover, deeply sorry to any such attack and extremely excited against these troublemakers, tarnished their revolution, one of the best nights of their lives.
Omar, "specializing in sexual harassment Tahrir

Since the fall of Mubarak, Omar was in the hospital for other abused women during Friday demonstrations. So much so he says half-ironic and sincerely sorry:

"I'm going to specialize in sexual harassment Tahrir! "

The meeting with Ahmed during his service was cut short by one of his superiors ordered him not to talk to reporters. But just before, "said Ahmed who still proud of having saved the reporter from the clutches of a merciless crowd, slipping slyly:

"I heard that Obama had called, but he has not called me! "

Now due to this event we have decided to NEVER go to Egypt. We will spend our savings on a country that treats women better, we have also discussed this with our church who takes our school kids on class trips, and Egypt is off the list for visiting ever.

Its sad you dont care about what happens in your country. Its a joke to think that this story will go away. I will assure this story stays at the forefront of tourists minds when thinking about possible travel to Egypt.

If you cant respect the women of your own country you cant be trusted to stand up for the wives of tourists. We will NOT visit until this injustice is brought to light and those responsible are brought to justice.

  26. I found the 60 Minutes special disappointing, as the only reference to the Whodunnit ('We'll probably never know...') was lame, and that's pretty much what I'm interested in regarding this event. The complete lack of clarification - or even acknowledgement - of supposed Hillary-directed State Dept. 'mission for justice' and what happened there is also a cop-out of sorts.

I still think she was targeted by someone she had interacted with the week previously, that someone(s) incited that mob against her.

And apparently they will get away with it, and that sucks.

I am happy for Logan in some ways. This notion from her biggest detractors that Logan 'faked' the whole episode, or over-reacted to relatively minor provocations, or is using the miserable episode as some kind of career-promo can be laid to rest.

I also am happy for Logan that no nasty video of what happened to her has appeared, and I hope none ever does. Its the one tiny bit of luck she's had in the whole thing.

And then to see her that very evening break into the 60 Minutes show to share details of Osama's demise at the utter humiliation of Pakistan - a country Logan in her reporting is obviously suspicious and critical of - to be a great Comeback of sorts. What timing!

  30. My YouTube account is no longer disabled and Google/YouTube even apologized to me. The Title, "Lara Logan - The Full Report - Fact, Fiction, or Sexual Fantasy" says it all about the incident, if it is True, Fiction, or someones Sexual Fantasy.

I believe what she said. If she left out things, she may be in denial or doesn't remember them due to their horrific nature. I believe CBS is leaving things out to cover their butts because they let her get into this situation.

    I am sorry for her.

One thing I have learned is how frequent and open sexual harassment is in Egypt against their woman. I never new that before. If anything good can come of Lara Logan's rape, it is the exposure of this Egyptian problem to the world.

Maybe this will help the Egyptian people correct it.

  31. Testimony from a foreign woman and her friend who were assaulted by a crowd that night after 1 am. Thanksfully it was stopped but it could be far worse without the intervention of good people there. http://harassmap.org/reports/view/354

  32. An account of what happened that night from a Christian Coptic in Egypt named "Ideodaniach" on the Temoris Grecko blog:

Ideodaniach posted this on 5/8. He also posted other comments about this as well.

  36. After much searching of the internet, I have concluded, the assault was not a planned attack by the authorities. Due to NO police presence, a bunch of thugs, hooligans, rapist & other criminals were turned loose who took advantage of the situation. Other women, Egyptian women, were also assaulted that night. Lara Logan was in the wrong place at the wrong time & paid dearly for that error in judgement. This was not a Moslem thing, but an assault clearly directed at women of all backgrounds.

Mmm Hmm. Because Egyptian rapists always call their victims Jewish spies.

I'm sorry, but this has nothing to do with Lara Logan, but this story needs to be told. Just like Khaled Said, this young boy was murdered by a cruel dictator's thugs in Syria. If you have another blog for this story that is more appropiate for, please put it there.

  39. @michael.boyd6, Zeinobia already did a post about it. And another.

  40. I add my voice to Nathalie, we NEED STRICT RULES against sexual harrasment. Its insane how men accept the fact that they can sexuall harrase any woman, but I wonder do they ever think of how he would feel if the opposite happens.
We cant just keep ignoring this issue anymore, I wish I knew where or how to start this path, but the first step to solve any problem is to acknowledge there is 1, and boy is it a big 1.
