Before Star wars and Forbidden Planet there was Metropolis 1927
I found about this treasure film by accident ,already I know that I saw scenes in it the promo of the famous TV Show "OSCAR" in the channel Two when I was a kid
I began to dig more and more about it because I love the following :
- Art Deco of the 1920s style
- The Futuristic films
- The political-social films
- The Sci-Fi Films
- The visual effects in the films
- The wonderful story
- Black and white film
You will be surprised that this silent film was may be the first Sci-Fi presented in the history of the cinema in the world and you will be surprised more with the visual effects and techniques that were used in that film
It is enough to know that it was the most expensive film produced back then , as far as I read this film costed what it is equal 200 million dollars in year 2005 back at its time
Strangely it was not produced in Hollywood , no Hollywood did not produce these kinds of films , it was produced in Germany
The film plot is similar to H.G.Well's Time Machine ,the future society that is classified in to parts the very rich who live in the skyscrapers and the very poor who live down in the slums , of course the very rich in Metropolis are not the pretty Greek gods alike creatures and the poor are the ugly beasts , no may be I used a bad example
Anyhow Metropolis City is from two class the rich thinkers who live in the sky "the minds" and the poor workers "the hands" who live in earth , the poor workers want to rebel against their masters yet they are waiting for the mediator "the heart" whom the beautiful Maria promised them that will come eventually to save them and bring justice , the mediator , the long time waited hero people are always waiting to come , strangely the mediator turns the last man they expected, the son of the same man they hated , who began to believe in their cause
The film was accused to be promoting communism and fascism , I don't know about these accusation more I believe it is an anti-capitalistic but not to the level of the communism
Here is the trailer
surprised by seeing a review of metropolis here ! :S
ReplyDeletewell that is certainly a lovely movie and not too many people can stomache the presentation these days but the story is timeless ...
