Let Them Eat Cantaloupe !!

President Mubarak visited Sohag governorate last Thursday ." it seems that we should have floods from time to time so there will be attention to South Egypt" He spoke with the local officials and NDPians in a conference to know their problems , their achievements..etc.
The ministry of agriculture deputy in the governorate requested that the 56,000 reclaimed acres in the Sohag desert have electricity access to cultivate wheat , tomato and also cantaloupe.
The President's answer was as follows :
Cantaloupe !!?? and why do you want to cultivate  cantaloupe !??
The man did not answer leaving the microphone to a MP who asked Mubarak to give his orders to the governorate to build a bridge over a railroad crossing there , already there were other three bridges requests in different places in Sohag before this one. so in humor mode President Mubarak replied on this request :
The best thing is to eat the cantaloupe the guy before you is cultivating
Then he continued his humor saying to the rest of the audience :
Do you want Sohag to be all bridges !!??
Then he gave his orders to the officials and the government to check these requests.
I respect Mubarak's humor and age but I think he should not make fun from the people's requests in this way. Already what they have requested is not much and it should have been fulfilled by the governor himself not the President for God sake !!
Regarding the cantaloupe , I know its cultivation is provoking when we need more wheat but President Mubarak seems to forget that cultivating cantaloupe in thousands of acres across Egypt started in his era thanks to former minister of agriculture Youssef Wali.
Mohamed Ali brought cotton in to Egypt and after decades of his rule the Egyptian cotton became world famous product  where as Mubarak brought cantaloupe destroying our white gold !!

  1. was talking with a friend about that. he had a farming background and he said that some farmers cultivate cantaloupe as it helps in removing the extra soil salts.
