#EndSh #GlobalProtestFe12 For #Egypt : The world stands with Egyptian women

Tomorrow the women of the world will protest in solidarity with the Egyptian women in front our embassies against the sexual violence and attacks.

There will be protests in Aden , Ramallah, Yaffa, Rabat, Tunis, Beirut, Amman , Copenhagen , Brussels, Milano, New York, Washington, Ottawa , The Hague, Paris, London, Melbourne and Oslo

The global protests is coordinated by the Women Uprising in the Arab world.

There will be a protest tomorrow in Cairo at 6 PM at Talaat Harb square and I think there will be a rally from there to the Shura council to object the disgusting Shura MPs’ statements today. The Shura MPs in the human rights committee blamed the women for the sexual harassments and rape in shocking statements.

Remembering the Bride of the South

On April 5, 1985 a beautiful 18 years old Lebanese girl from the South of Lebanon became the first woman suicide bomber in the history of Arab resistance when she blew her car filled with explosives up next to Israeli military convey during the Israeli occupation to the region then.
That Lebanese girl was Sana’a Mehaidli and strangely only this year I have seen her picture and I have watched her recorded will where she urged all the Lebanese youth to join the resistance.
1985 : Sana’a’s will
She also asked her mother to forgive her because she did not tell her suicidal plan.
I do not care if she was a socialist or a nationalist , I do not care if she was communist or Islamist , I only care for Sana’a. Of course for the West Sana’a was and is a terrorist despite she did not kill any civilians.

#Virgintygate : More than important court rule

Today the administrative court has suspended the practice of the virginity tests officially in Egypt.
This verdict was the first fruit of the lawsuits filed by human rights organizations on behalf Samira Ibrahim. The rest of the fruits is the investigation with that doctor conscript that did that virginity next Sunday. The administrative court will also see if Samira should be compensated or not.
According to the administrative court : The virginity tests are violation to the sacred women’s body as well a clear violation to the constitutional declaration.
Ibrahim underwent the virginity tests after her rest in the clashes of March 9th sit in dispersion along with other girls “about 7 girls” , only Samira had the courage to sue SCAF and the army.

Woman Of The Year 2010 in Egypt

When I made that poll about "Man of the year 2010 in Egypt" people wondered why there was no in woman in the list and I remember that I said that I could not find a significant woman with significant achievements last year. Now I admit that I was wrong , there is a woman of year 2010 who should be mentioned

Thursday, December 30, 2010

And Here is The biggest Woman Achievements In 2010 in Egypt !!

Egyptian first lady Susan Mubarak claims that the biggest Egyptian women achievements in 2010 is the woman’s quota in the parliament , in fact it is a triumph that will be recorded in the history of our nation “as if the Egyptian woman had not entered the parliament competing with men directly since 1957 not to mention our right to vote in 1956 !!”
Here we are after two weeks if I am not mistaken form the parliament and our ladies are doing more than great in talking on the phone during the session.
From Facebook
The first two women MPs in Egypt were elected in 1957 : Amina Shoukry from Alexandria and Rawiah Attia  from Giza, they were the first Arab women MPs to enter the parliament. Without these two pioneer ladies would be ashamed of these quota MPs !!

Kolena Laila : We Are Strong Arab Ladies

This year our dear Kolena Laila went from local borders to regional Arabic borders with posts from around the Arab world in amazing blogging experience. Some people especially from men consider the Kolena Laila as an experience to whine and to curse the man who enslaves woman ..etc well for sure the Arab woman suffers a lot and for sure after all those years , the world especially the west has this perception of the Arab woman as the weak lady who only will be liberated by the help of the west and its values but ..

I just got tired from this image and this perception, again yes part of this image is true the Arab woman as an oriental woman suffers from the male domination which I believe exists all over the world but in different percentage in different ways through out the time. Arabian women are not that weak and they must know that. Through out our great history we had these wonderful bright examples starting of strong powerful ladies from Queens to religious icons to to national heroines to 20th century’s pioneers to simple ladies in their homes serving and protecting their families.

I do not know why the world ignores a woman like Dr. Samira Moussa as a brilliant example of an Arab woman scientist or like Djamila Bouhired as an Arab woman warrior or like Safia El-Sadat who stood in front of a whole society to defend her marriage from a man regarded to be from a lower different class. Even from our old history we had bright wonderful examples of strong confident  ladies like Asama Bint Abi Baker , Lady Fatimah and Lady Zeinab. There are thousands of strong successful Arab women in different positions from scientists to CEO and yet no one shads the light and speaks or celebrates these achievements as if we are only used to dark sad examples.

These examples must be highlighted and remind people with how successful an Arab woman can be despite all the challenges and hardships in the way without the help of anyone.

Kolana Laila : Sexual Harassment In The Ol’ Good Days

This was an issue from Egyptian “ Monday and the world” Magazine. It was a popular magazine in the old good days. This issue is dated “4th of October 1954” and one of its main reports was the rise of sexual harassment in the Egyptian street then. I was surprised because in the old good days they did not have this sort of sexual harassments we have now and suffering from. It was mainly verbal sexual harassments they were suffering from and the whole society was suffering this phenomenon.

The report was a discussion with Egyptian ladies on how to combat this problem and its reason. When you read it “I recommend that you read in full screen mode” ,you will find most of what those ladies are speaking about is just like what we are speaking about but in old fashioned way ; they were speaking about the lack of laws and police that did not care then , they were speaking about whether ladies were to blame because of what they wore the.

By the way the last page included a wonderful report about Syrian women and elections , Syrian women voted in the 1954 elections

Monday Magazine 54 - 1954

People then , the public used to find a solution for these verbal sexual harassment , if they busted a boy or man stalking a lady or a girl ,he would either be beaten the crap out of him or he would be taken to the barber shop to have all his head shaved ; the perfect punishment ,being a young and bald seems to have a bad meaning then it seems. Of course we can’t apply this shaving method now because baldness is fashion but beating the crap of the real sexual harassments will be a sufficient solution if the state does not want to do anything about it for real. I do not know what happened to the Egyptians now , is being politically passive has made us socially passive too !!?? I know that many factors have differed ,especially the factors that are causing young men to act like this but I am asking about the rest of the people , the older generations who still remember how it was safe to walk in our streets ; what happened to them !!?? What happened to the Egyptians ??

The Real Samia Fahmy

Many people are currently watching the Egyptian TV series “Samia Fahmy : The Spies war” which is based “badly” upon Saleh Morsi’s book “Samia Fahmy” which was based by its turn on a real GIS file in 1970s just like the rest of Morsi’s spy books. I know for sure that those people are trying to guess who the real Samia Fahmy is in our press in the same way those who read the books have guessed in vain on who was that daring young lady who did not give up her country for love or for money.
Well do not guess anymore because Ladies and Gentlemen I present to you the Real Samia Fahmy.

Our Part in Obama’s speech

To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist !!

Barack Obama

44th President of United States of America

On the 20th of January 2009

Inaugural Speech

I feel that he is speaking about us or rather about Mubarak !! Of course he did not mean Mubarak in particular because there are too many of his kind in the world ,mostly in the third world but “The one with an injury in his head will feel it”* !! This was our part in his speech , Mubarak fits in the profile.

I do not know if this means a new chapter in the bad relations between Cairo and Washington regarding the political reforms in advance. It is worth to mention that Hilary was not our friend in the congress as far as I remember in the past years.

The problem in our case is that Mubarak is willing to unclench his fist to leave it for his son !!

We need our own old diggers in the Egyptian blogsphere

I want you to visit these two blogs

The first one is for Mrs. Margaret Cloud ,Mrs. Cloud is 75 years bloggeress from the United States of America. Dear Mrs. Cloud blogs about her life and sometimes about her memories.

The second is for Margaret and Helen who had been friends for the last years and despite they live in different states at America and despite they are 81 years old the speak in politics , yes they speak in politics.

Now I wish that we have like those wonderful inspiring ladies in our Egyptian blogsphere , we tried to make something similar like this in Kolena Laila this year by the documentation the history of Laila , of course it did not work as we expected our wanted , it is not only about history and politics but sharing simple life experiences.

Of course the access to computer and how to use it can be hard for the old Egyptian ladies for the generation of Mrs. Cloud ,Margaret and Helen but we can help them to reach for the world using podcasts and Vlog ,their offspring and grandchildren can help them to do so.

Not only this is an important of our history but also it is important for those ladies in Egypt to feel that they are still contributing to the society in a way or another.

Kolena Laila : The first Egyptian girl students in the Cairo University

Ladies and gents I am proudly sharing with you here a very rare photo for the first Egyptian Female Students in the Cairo University or rather the University of Fouad I in early 1930s.Those daring ladies or girls then should be mentioned in the 100th anniversary of the Cairo University and in the Kolena Laila celebration of pioneer ladies.
Before showing you this rare photo, here is a little introduction about how these ladies found their way to the University. We spoke before about the role of Princes Fatimah important role in founding the Cairo University in its current location yet we did not know how Egyptian Laila found her way to the hallways and the auditoriums of the University. There is a little piece of information many do not know that the Cairo university or Fouad University after its inauguration held lectures for high classes ladies where  Madam Couvreur of France used to speak , Madam Couvrer was brought by the request of Prince Ahmed Fouad I with the help of Gaston Maspero. Those lectures were in French and by time some Middle high class ladies joined them still on a very narrow scale. There were other pioneer ladies in Press who thought that those lectures should be translated to Arabic. Lebanese Labiba Hasham in the “Girl of Orient” Newspaper “Yes there was such newspaper then” and the early activist famous Malak Hafiny Nasaf in the “Nation’s party” did that great job. Hasham even raised the bar and called for the Egyptian Ladies to lecture instead of Foreign ladies.
By time a separate women section was opened in the Fouad University but it was closed in the WWI in no time.
Those girls entered the Cairo University in 1929 breaking taboos you can’t imagine back then. The first class of young Egyptian ladies consisted of 17 girls only that Dr.Ahmed Lutfi El-Sayed ,the head of the Fouad University then along with deans of the faculties of Arts “Taha Hussein” and medicine “Dr.Ali Ibrahim” let them enter the University secretly without informing the education ministry except when those 17 girls succeeded in their study , women can study like men , there was no need to not let them complete their study.
From those 17 girls I found the photo of those fantastic 5 girls
The first girl students in Cairo university
From rigth to left Dr. Naema El-Ayauobi and Miss Fatimah Salem setting and behind them , Mrs. Zahirah Abd El Aziz,Dr. Sohair El-Qalamawy and Mrs. Fatimah Fahmy.
I was the first girl to enter the University
Also here is a short essay by Dr. Naema El-Ayauobi under the title “I was the first girl to enter the University” who was among those first Egyptian female students describing her daring experience. In summary she was describing how the girls were shy and avoided any contact with the boys  and how The dean of the faculty of Arts Dr. Taha Hussein told them that if anyone annoyed them or if they needed anything , they should go immediately to his office and complain to him.
It is sad thing that we did not remember those fine ladies and their names except for Dr.Sohair El-Qalamawy ,the famous student of Dr. Taha Hussein thanks to her contribution to the Arabic literature and the fact she was the first woman to hold the position of the famous head of the Arabic language section in the faculty of Arts at the Cairo University from 1958 to 1967.
Dr.Sohair  as I hinted was the student of Dr.Taha Hussein and he supervised her master and her PHD in Arabic Literature which was about One thousand and one nights aka in the West The Arabian Nights , yup the original nights and I read that PHD study when it was published in the Reading for all festival among the treasures of the Arabic literature.
TO be honest till the early 1950s not many families were ready to send their girls to universities like men , for them girls should be educated to get married, I think it was not in Egypt only but rather the whole world , if you watch the Mona Lisa smile you will know what I am speaking about.
By the way if you want to publish the picture in your website or what ever you want please do it but do not forget me , I did not put copyright on it because it is a scan and I am doing this to encourage you to speak about those fantastic ladies but I will not hate that you do not forget my effort.

Kolena Laila:Poor Egyptian sad Laila

I heard this stupid silly joke about the Egyptian woman that forced me to write down this post. This joke by the way is popular through SMS.

It is as follows

The Muslim Man has the right to marry four woman .

One Lebanese Woman to lover him.

One Syrian Woman to cook for him .

One Philippine Woman to serve him.

And one grumpy Egyptian Woman to make his night and the other three women’s night dull and sad “Nakad !!??”

Believe me some people laughed including women I know despite its insulting humiliating nature !!

It is based upon the sick perceptions of an Egyptian Arabian man who considered the Lebanese woman is beautiful body ,the Syrian Woman thanks to her native Cuisine  is excellent cook and the Philippine is the maid !!

Completely racism that degrades women to the lowest degree, you may laugh for one second but if you think from another second you will see how it is humiliating !!

And Now to the Egyptian Woman who is specialized in drama and agony.

I do not know why the Egyptian man does not  stop thinking for one second that his woman is the source of agony in the world and that he is a hero that he can live with her.

With my all respect you want to know who is the Egyptian woman , I will tell you who is the Egyptian Woman , she is the woman chosen by God to carry the Child that would start a race in the desert ,she was a strong enough to be left alone with a child in the desert ,she is the mother of the Arabs if you forget.

My dear Egyptian Man , the woman that you make jokes about is your mother, sister and daughter .

I won’t say that she is your wife because it seems that it is hell for some Egyptians to marry an Egyptian woman !!

My dear Egyptian Man , I am not your enemy , I am your natural half that you can’t live without.

Our beautiful child is now 3 years old and is getting bigger and bigger.

You can answer this survey and tell us what do you think , if you are girl then please click here and if you are a boy then please click here . We care so much for your opinion.
Wait for more today ;)

Kolena Laila : The Laila who if it were not for her, there would be no Cairo University.

It won’t be appropriate in the 100th anniversary of the Cairo University and on the Kolena Laila day to forget the Princess Fatimah Ismail.

The woman whom without what she had done to the Cairo University, there would Not University in the first place.

But first who was she??

Princess Fatimah was the daughter of Khedive Ismail, the famous Princess Fatimah Ismailruler of Egypt who tried to make from Cairo another Paris despite our financial capabilities could not afford then. She was the elder sister of the Sultan Hussein Kamel and King Fouad I; also she was the aunt of King Farouk.

It seems that Khedive Ismail raised his daughter born on the 3rd of June 1853 on the love of culture, education and arts. She married from her relative prince Tusun Mohamed Sa’id in 1871 but their marriage didn’t continue as her groom died after 7 years only leaving her with a boy “Omar” and a girl “Esmat”. The boy grew up to become the famous Prince Omar Tusun who was born on the 8th of September 1872, seeing the life of the mother you won’t be surprised that her son was one of the most active princes in the Mohamed Royal who contributed a lot in the social and scientific life of his country. Princess Fatimah married again from Prince Mahmoud Sari and gave birth to 2 sons “Mohamed and Ahmed” and a daughter “Amina”.

Princess Fatimah was the one who founded the Islamic Charity society that built many schools and hospitals for the poor throughout her life from her own money and you can see how large the projects of that society represented in the Agouza charity Hospital which follows the society till this day.

You have to know that that fine princess allocated 3357 acres for charity, that their revenue not to be hers but for the people on the 13th of July 1913.The revenue of that land would fund the Islamic Charity society in order to educate the poor kids, she wanted them to be doctors and engineers to revive her grandfather Mohamed Ali project in a way or another.

The story of our Laila with the University started when she knew from her personal doctor “Mohamed Pasha Alawi” that the Cairo University was facing huge financial troubles. Dr. Alawi were the first donors to the University .The Cairo university when it was first founded, it was named the National university .It was located in the current location of the Old AUC in down Cairo. After two years from its big inauguration in December 1908 , the University could not pay its costs , the rent of the buildings was too much, it was L.E 400 per year , of course you will laugh but remember my dear reader that this amount of money was equal to L.E 4 Million nowadays.

And here comes the role of the generous princess.

As soon as she knew the problem that could shut up the University for Good, she acted immediately. She allocated 661 acres in Delta from her charitable 3357 acres to the University; she made sure that 40% of the revenue of the 3357 would be dedicated to the University annually. She also donated piece of land in Giza including her own palace that was turned in to the Agricultural museum later.

Things got better and the administration of the University immediately started to build new buildings but again financial troubles came along.

And again the princess came to rescue the University again, this time she raised the bar again. The Princess decided to pay all the remaining costs of the University that were estimated then L.E 26,000 through selling some of her precious jewels in an auction to cover the expenses of the University. The Jewels could not be sold in Egypt because of their value, the administration of the University sent Dr. Alawi with Jewels to be sold in Europe and I think they were sold in Italy for L.E 600,000

The Jewels are so beautiful when you see them; you will wonder how can a lady give them so easily??

The generosity of Princess did not stop here because the Princess paid the expenses of the inauguration celebration of the University at its new location. The administration thanked the Princess Fatimah publicly by scribing a message of thanks over the main entrance of the faculty of Arts. Till now the message is still there and thousands of students crossed that entrance everyday, some of them had changed the face of literature not in Egypt but the whole Arab world

The Cairo University was not the only University in East that fine lady donated for it , before her death she donated on the 18th of November 1920 a sum of 2 million golden Turkish Lira to the Istanbul University

Among the 10 children of Khedive Ismail or to be precise the 6 daughters of the Khedive Princess Fatimah seems to me to inherit Princess Fatimahpart of her grandmother Valida Pasha Khushiyar. The beautiful Egyptian princess was from the most charitable princesses and most one of them involved in the cultural life of Egypt during that time. She was not a Haram princess for sure despite she was not a rebel as you may think still she was a great example of a princess and a mother.

she did what she could to continue I believe what her father and grandfather to do ; to found a modern and independent Egypt not through wars or through fancy building but through the most effective weapon of all time : Education.

Princess Fatimah died in year 1920, she did not see the National university turning to the University of Fouad I, she did not see it growing bigger and bigger and she did not see how it changed the Egypt and the Arab world but for sure if she saw all that she would feel more than proud .The Egyptian National university paid a respect and is still paying respect to her. In 1998 in the 90th anniversary of the university the Cairo University launched a search with the help of the foreign ministry to allocate in the grandchildren of the late princess, after the revolution most of Mohamed Ali family members had left Egypt to Europe, they found the grand children after a considerable time in Paris. I really wish that the University administration invite them again in the 100th anniversary of the University.

I consider Princess Fatimah Egyptian more than many Egyptians nowadays because what she had done had changed the fate of Egypt forever, she did not take as much she gave.

She is our Royal Laila who understood the Role of the first lady for real decades before first lady became an accessory to the President; she did it without cameras and big words, she did it based on a belief and that’s why she will and should be remembered when we speak about pioneer ladies in Egypt and the Arab world
